Which flare nut spanners?

Hi,

I'm going to buy a set of these, probably from Machine Mart. Is there a particular set of sizes I need look out for?

Sadly 8mm and 9mm will be most useful for citroens, try snap on but be ready for a slight shock.

Only go for hexagonal types. 12edge will round the flare nuts first attempt.

Thanks for the info. I bought a couple from Halfords. Lifetime guarantee, hexagonal type about £4 each.

dont wast your dosh on cheap ones as there jaws spread then round of the nut,snap on are the best i have eever used,but they are not cheap

Did you find the sizes I suggested at Halfords then? I have used some of their tools and they were okay for quality.

A normal spanner (open end) will grip the points of the hex, a bi hex flare spanner will also do this, this aint much good on a hollow pipe fitting. A mono hex flare spanner is best, as this will grip the flats, or I have allways found that a snap on open ended flank drive spanner to be better than any flare nut spanner.

If the snap on flank drive wont do it then it's cut the pipe, use a mono hex socket and then make a new pipe.

Also I find Halfords tools realy good quality, unfortunatly the guarantee dont cover loosing them!!!

I bought a 'full' set from Halfords which are 9&11mm, 10&12mm, 13&14mm and 15&17mm. I used the 9mm to change the anti sink sphere a couple of nights ago. I've always liked Halfords spanners from the time I was bought a set of their ratchet spanners several years ago, I find the sizing to be accurate, they're strong and the polished chrome finish means they're easy to keep clean. Sounds as though I need to source an 8mm one though.

Buck & Hickman do a flare spanner, 8mm one end and 10mm the other, they are on line or have braches all over the place.

A quick google around should find the nearest to you.
