Unread post by zxb29 »

Hi all

Will be getting a 406 2.1 litre (2088cc) turbo diesel

what are the engines on these cars like.

current mileage is on 108k engine seems to be running nice and smooth.

what kind of mileage do these go up to if taken care of ?

thanks in advance

i've got a xantia 2.1, same engine as the 406, it's done 190k on an R reg, and it pulls well and sounds decent, no nasty looseness, ask in the citroen forum for more experiences, i'm sure AndersDK will tell you that they are rugged engines and would last very long if looked after... oil changes every 5k miles and coolant change when needed too, just done mine, another oil change soon.

I ran a 2.1 Xantia from new for seven years, changing it as it approached 100K. All the time I had it, it didn't put a foot wrong, other than needing a new set of glowplugs. I changed oil and filter every 6000 and coolant every two years. I also did the cambelt every 40K. It's a great engine - even better after VanAchan fitted a box.

Whats this Vanachan box thing then? a kind of piggy back ECU for the engine as i guess it would push power upto about 130bhp or thereabouts as the engines feel like they could easily handle a lot more power and torque...

Don't have the figures to hand now but 130bhp sounds familiar. I got mine done mainly for a bit of extra poke for caravan towing. It made a great improvement with very little effect on fuel consumption.

3k revs - thats like driving a petrol ?
You can do away changing gears already at 2200-2500 revs. That will certainly uprate your mpg.

Note that the largest and most important difference between petrol and diesel engines is the low rpm pulling torque.
The 2.1TD will peak already at some 1800rpm. A comparable petrol will peak at some 3500rpm - i.e. double the rev count
You will need to change driving habits ...

From brim to brim, and over a month, my 2.1 averaged 42mpg. BUT - according to GPS the mileometer and speedo was 5% optomistic so I suppose the figure should be more like 40mpg.

Near Bracknell in Berkshire.I had my 1.9TD uprated 4 yrs ago at a cost of £385.Although that was done on the fuel pump, not a chip.Well worth it on mine. Its still a lot faster than a std 1.9TD.
Do a Google search for Diesel engine tuning. There will be loads of companys tuning diesels. :)

This is the company that did my 2.1 and at around the same price. It came in the form of a black box which plugged into the ecu.
