MOTs

Unread post by leonardo »

How much do people pay for MOTs?
I go to an independent MOT only place and pay £39 but they don't flog you expensive, unneccessary parts, but warn you if something is likely to need attention soon (last year my gaitors were leaking which doesn't mean an MOT failure so I got them fixed shortly afterwards)
I've seen some places charge £30 but I notice they do repairs ...
I once went to a chain and came out with 4 new tyres, brake pads and discs and a massive bill!

Leonardo,
There is an agreed price for an MOT, set by the Government, and which I think is around £40 now. Garages are free to charge whatever they like up to this level, but I (cynic that I am!) always look at lower charges as a 'loss leader' to get you through the door, given that an MOT takes about an hour, and needs more than one person in places.

My local garage charges £37.60, but gives customers 14 days to take their cars away after a failiure and bring it back for a retest FOC.
A garage near where I work charges a tenner, but I've never known a car pass there yet!

Took my H-reg 205 to National Tyres, Canal Road, Bradford.
Half-price MoT. Failed on number plate light not working.
Tester pointed out my exhaust was perforated from engine to back box – but not enough to warrant a fail. Didn't even try to sell me one despite having one in stock.
Gave me a week to get the offending bulb replaced and recover from shock.
I rekon a bit of kid-ology is needed mind. I went wearing steel-capped boots and oily jeans, and since the car was ancient I wouldn't have looked worth fleecing.

£39.25 from Oakhill Garage in Sutton on Friday - and the BX 16V passed first time [:D]
But then, it has only done 2,700 miles since the last one [:p]
Not used them before, but got me booked in no probs considering it's August, and garage is run by an ex-BX 16V phase 1 owner who only parted with it after it was written off when parked [:(]
Actually had a decent brake tester too, unlike most with something rescued from a breakers yard!

there are 3 garages ive used down my way. moorlands charge 10quid, u havea a 14 day free retest. malmacs offer a no pass no fee, but go armed with 20 quid in case it passes. A1 services did my last car for 27quid. but they found a petrol leak so couldnt carry it out... they rebooked me FOC and gave me 14 days to get work done. they also picked the car up from my house to do the test!
if u are unhappy about work u need to carry out, get a second garage to look at it.
if they always pass yr car and u feel they shouldnt have, ie 1 of my cars has worn shocks(but i just wanted a ticket at the time), u can appeal against the mot upto 28 days afterwards or 3months for rust/corrosion probs. BUT why would any1 do this?????!!!!
if u carry kids in the car u cant cut corners...

I chose one giving a tenner off.
They passed it but put on 2 wipers (£3.50 each at Andyspares) without asking "thought you wouldn't mind guv!" and added 20 quid!

Local garage to me (south wales) £37 Took my car in last week he pointed out that my nearside sidelight was not working and one of my numberplate lights was out. After he did the main inspection he told me to park up round the corner and fixed them... cost £0.70p for plate bulb and nearside side light was a loose connection... He came back to the car and was satisfied... One new MOT :)

MOT = Ministry Of Transport
It is a legal requirement in the UK to have all road vehicles inspected when they reach 4 years old and then each year subsequently. The inspection covers major safety and environmental aspects of the vehicle.
Incidentally the Ministry has been renamed to the 'Department for Transport' but the test is still called the MOT.

Ministry Of Transport is what M.O.T stands for, in UK, it is unlawful to operate a motor car over 3 years old without having an M.O.T test certificate, the certificate is valid for 12 months and means the car has been tested by a ministry approved testing station and found to be safe for use on public highways.
After 12 months we all get shafted again....and again.....and....

OK, now I now. In Croatia we have the same thing but new car is obliged to pass "our MOT" after 3 years, and after that it is necessary to pass it every year. From 1st of October this year all cars with petrol engines will have to satisfy ECO test. Cars with diesel engines will have to be in best condition from 1st October next year in order to pass eco test on regular annual testing during car examination. During last 2 or 3 years eco tests were performed but results were not obligatory for passing the MOT.
