Xantia HDi accelerator

Just driven a V plate HDi and found pressing the accelerator pedal was like squeezing a house brick!! Now aren't these drive by wire rather than mechanical direct linkages so what's giving the hard feel/travel?

Either a sticky cable to the throttle pot or to strong a spring.
