Remote Central locking

Me again!

My friend has a 406 Exective 1998 S plate 2 ltr HDI (one of the first?)

His remote central locking seems to work when it feels like it.
Sometimes it will work when you are away from the car but not near it. Sometimes it wont work at all and sometimes it works for about 5 or 6 lock/unlocks.

Normally he gets one unlock and that's it.

We've done the battery change (3 times). We've tried reprogramming the key to the car (He only has one key).

I'm wondering if there is a known problem with the transponder in the car (?where is it?) or whether the central locking relay could be giving out (But all works ok on the key lock).

He hasn't got the money for main dealer diagnosis so I said I would ask the experts.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated

the high frequency part of the plip is seperate to the transponder,if it starts ok transponder is ok ,the hf receiver is up behind the glove box but that is usally ok.There was a mod to the battrys where you fit washer under lower battry to make it tight otherwise it would loose its syncronization,to resync turn igntion on and push big black button on plip till light goes out,part no for battery kit with washer is 9926jy

You shouldn't need to fit any washers, if you use the right size battery.
These are usually 2016/2025/2032. Where the last two digits represent the thickness of the battery in millimetres eg 2032 = 3.2mm thickness.

If you need to fit a washer then you are probably using 2016's when you should be using 2025 or 2032's. The thicker batteries will also last much longer.
