Xantia 1.8 8V - No spark..

Unread post by RichardW »

My Dad's 93 Xantia 1.8 8V has died [:(] - not getting any spark. It's been taken to the local Cit garage, but ready for when they say "Sorry, Sir, the computer says it's OK, but it still won't run" or "Sorry, Sir, it needs an entire new ECU and wiring loom" or "Sorry, Sir, we can't even look at that unless you leave us # hundred pounds" ** anybody got any known weaknesses (Yeah, apart from the whole engine[:D]) on the electronics of these engines (crank sensor springs to mind)??
# - insert any amount you care to think of, multiplied by 10
** - take your pick from today's excuses
Richard
Update: Crank sensor it was. Garage relieved him of £30 for the sensor and 1.5 hours at £45/hour (all + VAT, of course!) to diagnose and fit it though.... Still thinking about a career change!

... also my first bet.
... next bet would be the fuel pump/relay/fuse.
Must (should !) be fairly easy for a Citroen garage pinpointing the problem.

do these have a ignition module that feeds pulses to the coil? had one fail on my pug 405, results were similar to your symptoms.

I love these characters who charge some of these prices & then start going off on a tangent doing component changes to fault find; how can they justify a price like that in those circumstances?
An hourly charge of 45 (sorry, no pounds symbol on my colonial computer) when looked at in the light of a 40 hour week & full year's work, equates to 93,600 pounds.
Imagine if you went to the doctor with a belly ache & his response was "look mate, I think we'll whip yer appendix out for starters & see how that goes" and follows this up a week later with, "Nah...that didn't seem to work, so next week we might go for the spleen.....and if that don't work, well whip a few inches of intestine out; just persevere with me, we'll find it eventually!!!"
What do you pay your Doctors over there is it as much as these repairers? Or perhaps are some of these service guys ex Doctors who o[ted for a change in career on financial grounds??[:D][:D]

Sorry to here about the problems with your dads car. Have you tried giving all the connectors a good wiggle ,it's worth a try.
