Evening...
I posted this in the Peugeot forum.

Does anyone know which Citroen/Peugeot radiators are compatible with a 1993 405 TD with aircon?

Mine has started to leak, and I don't want to fork out hundreds on a new one as it'll be more than the car is worth.

Hi Robin. One question, is the rad leaking from one of the tanks or from the core? It its from the core, change it. It its from the tanks, they usually can be replaced.

The leak appears to be coming from the core, right at the bottom. It'll give me more options at the scrappies if I can hunt for more than rear-ended 405's.

If it's going to end up costing too much, I might go over to a Xantia (if the wife lets me).

I don't know what others might fit but you really need to restrict the hunt to rads from indirect injection diesels such as the one that you own, meaning that one from a diesel 306, 406, zx or xantia might go in.

The reason for saying that is because these diesels loose more heat to the cooling system than any petrol or direct injection diesel engine, so they need to be more efficient and thus are often much larger.

If you don't like spending money on cars (or more to the point if your missus don't like you spending money on cars) you really don't want a xantia, They can be a potential money pit, and having said that I'd best go and find my asbestos boiler suit

I'd have a Xantia!! Theres TONS more spares for them on Ebay all the time...

Certainly a much cheaper car to run then the 405.. Nothing against the 405, there just seems to be more breaking and so more cheaper spares..

Your cheapest way may be to take it to a radiator specialist like Serk (if they still exist) look on the net or in yellow pages. They will usually fit a new core for about half the price of a new radiator. GSF do a new one for £89.50 + vat and that will possibly be post free.

Last time I went to Serks (we have a local office too) for a price on a Xantia Rad it was over £100 !!!

That was about 4 years ago..

citroenxm - Oh right! I am going back a bit, I had my CX td radiator done a few years ago and I think it cost me abot £60-70 against a new Citroen one being about double. But I dont think GSF were about at that time.

Lancashire Motor Radiator Company (located in Liverpool by St Annes Street police station) did a brilliant repair to my rad for £18 and stripped the old paint and resprayed it all in, and only took them an hour, VERY VERY impressed, though i guess it depends where your located!

Is a Xantia a money pit?????

If your thinking of taking a radiator off at the scrappers I personally wouldnt...the time took to get it out and then no assurances as to how long its going to last or even if its already leaking I would just spend the £100 which was for my Xantia and get the thing done yourself with piece of mind.

I'd love to be able to afford to spend a ton on it, let alone be allowed to!

At the moment, there's not too much of a leak, and after a run there's no pressure in the radiator...is this a bad sign?

As it will have to come off, I might have a go with good old 'Chemical Metal' or whatever the newest fancy equivalent is.

Once the rad is fixed, new front pipe and centre pipe are needed, too. Grrr!

My Xantia is a money pit, I spend quite a bit of money on it. I fill the fuel tank up and it just empties it again!

As for servicing costs, the hydraulics have cost next to nothing, I've replaced spheres and changed the LHM but I've saved money on shocks and springs. I've yet to see a shock absorber that lasts as long as a Citroen hydraulic strut and steel springs rust then the car gets saggy they don't last forever do they? Cars with PAS have a hydraulic pump and cars with conventional brakes need their brake fluid changing. Vegetable based brake fluid absorbs water and that makes the calipers rust and leak, have you noticed how long lasting hydraulic Citroen's brake calipers are?

I havent spent a lot in the 6 months I got her.

Radiator at £105 which was taken out of the final sale price so i dont count that 8)

I purchased 2 tyres which I dont count since (forget the term) these are things that you are 'using' so to speak....if anyone knows the term shout it out

LHM change about £30

Glow plugs at about £20

5 spheres in total

Cambelt and water pump - which is something like the tyres, you do it more for the piece of mind if you like rather than because the car is a money pit....talk about justifying

and 5k services...thats actually about it

Where as the Zx had a lot more work done to it but all work done by ourselves which was still pretty cheap going....Took my sis home yesterday and saw my Xantia, it was an emotional moment

Consumeables.

Which is all I've ever had to buy for my 405TD....

There are actually very few cars that are massively more expensive to maintain than others, it's more a case of how well it's been maintained in the past as to how much it will cost to maintain now.

Thats been my experience as well.... my TD was obviously poorly maintained (see previous posts) and subsequently I have spent loads getting it right...whereas my V6 hasn't missed a beat (touch wood).
