The release bearing failed without any warning. I thought initialy it was the cable or the dreaded clip, but further investigation revealed that the release arm had about 50mm free play. The car has covered 103 thousand miles ,the friction plate had loads of life left in it.
THe only warning I think I had was the odd sticky gear change .

Iv'e just replaced the clutch in my TD, not because it was slipping or juddering but because it had got very heavy in operation, its bloody lovely now after putting up with it for so long.
There was less than a millimeter difference between the old and new driven plates yet there was a mountain of dust everywhere.

I found the same when the clutch in my Xantia TD was replaced. A very heavy pedal action but no other problems.
The new clutch transformed the car, or so it seemed. I had previously tried to avoid driving in stop-start traffic because it just hurt my left foot too much ! (and I was paranoid about the plastic clip breaking)
