Please help!
I've been having trouble locating the engine number on my car but now that I've found it, I can't read it. I've tried tracing it etc but am at a loss. Is there anyway I can find the engine number out? I know I can probably ring up Renault and give then the VIN number / number plate and they 'might' help, but I'd prefer to read it off the engine as the car is going for a VIC test.... My older (97) Laguna has a plate attached to the front of the block, but the newer (00) Laguna has the number etched into the block and there's so much in front of it as well as the rust that has taken place....

If you can get an old toothbrush in there, to clean out any dirt from the area it might make it more easy to read.
If it's still not clear, then use the toothbrush the wrong way round with some wet, and dry paper attached to the handle. A small amount of gentle cleaning should remove the surface rust from the area. Now clear out the cleaned surface with the brush end of the toothbrush, it should now be easier to read.
Although if it still isn't, then if you get a long thin white crayon, and rub it over the area, then remove the surlpus crayon, now the numbers should be easy to read, because the crayon will now highlight the numbers, as the remaining crayon will be left in each stamped number so making it easier to read.

Hi, thankyou for that but I'vetried it all apart from the sandpaper bit - the car's going for a VIC test and I don't want to get accused of tampering with it!
I used a toothbrush to clean it up (very awkward to get at), used the brush dry and dipped in WD40 to aid rust removal - no joy.
Did not use crayon, but used chalk and when I tried to wipe the excess off, the number sort of went as well. I think crayon might work better so will give that a go although I think the numbers are not deep enough.
Just about can make out K4M (I thought it was KAM but Haynes says it's K4M - and thats another reason, I might mistake the letters / numbers if they can't be read properly!)
