Hi there Gang,

Is there any way to identify which compressor is which.
Apart from the Sandens site is there a technical site for the other make/s?????

Hi there gang,

Found the make of air con , It's a Deplhi.
But the bad news is it's goosed.
Put in a red leak/restorer fluid and it flooded out.

Any suggestions on whether S/H unit or recon or brand new would be best considering the cost!

Most people don't go second hand purely because they can't vacuum and gas a system DIY.

There is no reason why a compressor that worked on a car that got scrapped won't work on your car. The only problem here is finding a compressor that will fit, there are loads of different compressors fitted to Xantias, all at the same time, so if you do buy one, you'll have to try to get matching pipes and pulleys too.

I'll keep you posted re the outcome. I'm curious as to how many different compressors fitted and is there any way of checking?
a friend who runs a garage checked an online system he has which suggested the compressor fitted to my xantia was a delphi and when I looked on unit it was marked a delphi, any further thoughts.

The car is of the road meantime until as the compressor sound s like a bag of nuts & bolts in a washing machine.

If you but second-hand, then just like any s/h part it may or may not be OK. Unlike most parts, however, it will involve a lot of hassle to test and find out, even supposing you get it from a decent seller on 'sale or return if its no good'.
Also unlike most parts, aircon bits can fail through lack of use, which makes it even riskier.
Have you investigated reconning your existing pump?

Excellent site and I think the compressor list is correct.
I tried the deplhi/Harrison site direct but no details were held.

It's me again re my compressor.

I took it off this afternoon and there is no way it can be recondidtioned.
One of the support brakets cracked and burst open the compressor allowing the fluid to leak, unrepairable.
Going to try the s/h compressor route , any sugestions if the DIY lubricant for seals etc will work if injected into the system once it is tested for leaks.
Do mobile air con mechanics add same when regasing system?

Any comments or suggestions welcome

The lubricant you need will be dependent on the gas you intend using.
Whoever does the regas should be able to sort that at the same time, but may pay to drain the compressor first just to make his job a bit easier.
If the system is a definite 134a then PAG oil is what you'll possibly have to use.

I've looked at the spec sheets for the various compressors and its not as easy as that. Each of the compressors (or compressor families) seems to spec a different oil, or a set of oils depending on gas used. In any case I found that I couldn't actually get a hold of the specific correct oils, I did quite a bit of searching and managed to buy the rest of the kit needed for the job but not the oil. You do get universal PAG oils, I'm not sure how good a substitute they are but they're probably better than nothing.

Going to bite the bullet and wait until compresor arrives and speak to a man in the know who has worked at the dealers for the last 20 years. he is now independant and is excellent for advise.
Also will look at the site mentioned by AlanS which has a break down of compressors for all french motors.

Will post details of the update when I complete the project.

Not as complicated as some would make you think.
I use an oil that I got from a guy currently in the trade and it's effectively one they use in marine applications that covers all gases except the ones using flurocarbon based ones.
I don't have a label on my bottle but I've no doubts your man at the supplier will point you at it.
