Rumbling on left-handers: Update

I posted a while ago about my Xantia making a rumbling noise occasionally going round left-handers. Lately it started doing it on right-handers too. Given that the problem was cleary getting worse I investigated again for the nth time (where n is a very large number) and reckon I've found it..

The noise begain shortly after I had a CV boot changed by a local garage. I noticed the ty-rap the garage had used on the small end of the new boot was very loose and as the steering moved I could see the boot moving along the shaft and really quite loose. Then I noticed that despite this loose ty-rap and a boot free to move along the shaft there was no grease leaking out. Truth was, there was no grease at all in the joint! It had not leaked out as I check the CV boots weekly so I can only assume the mentally challanged excuse for a mechanic had completely forgotten to grease the joint when he relpaced the boot. Maybe he had not had his bananas that day. A case of a grease monkey lacking grease.

Needless to say, that garage is unlikely to receive my custom ever again!!!

I have found that with hydropneumatic Cits and their abnormally wide range of suspension movement from totally flat to up on stilts the boots need to be REALLY tightly strapped on to stop the boot coming loose and the grease escaping....................that is, of course, assuming that grease was put in there in the first place..........

Sitting here reading a post in the Pug section of the forum on a vibrating 405 makes me think the HAM (Half-A***d Mechanic) who did my CV boot may well have neglected to refit the "C" clip on the end of the shaft judging by the range of lateral movement possible (about 3/4 inch) by gripping the shaft and comparing it to to the RH one and the LH one on my 205..

That would account for the problems too, if the shaft has too much lateral movement available to it. Are the "C" clips readily available or is it time for a trip to the breakers?

Finally, any danger in driving the car with the "C" clip missing?

You need that C clip -

It locates the driveaxle laterally. W/o the clip the LHD axle MAY dislodge enough to spill out gearoil.
Just had a look on PR-net. The clip is part of the CV boot kit - not available separately. But I'm sure your local Cit (or Peug) dealer would have it on the shelf as standard parts.

Yes !

Get it fixed ASAP. I've seen this happen on a GS and without the clip to locate the driveshaft it can move in and out of the joint, and on one particular car I know about the shaft moved out enough so that only the little bit of the spline on the end of the shaft (beyond the groove for the clip) was driving the car and it snapped the end off the drive shaft....
