2 Xantia probs

My '93 Xantia SX TD has developed a whine. It can be heard when driving in all gears and neutral and when stationary with the clutch either in or out. I've heard this sound on non citroens and always thought it was the PAS pump. Has anyone else had this on a xantia and if its the fuel pump or hydraulic pmp is it serious or something I can put up with? The car had an exchange pump 18 months ago according to previous owner's service history. The suspension brakes and steering are all behaving.

Second problem, I've got the same problem as Nick describes on his juddery 1.9TD thread. Could it be down to valve clearances? I've got the Bosch pump without ECU.

Well, its a bit hard to tell what the whine is without hearing it, but there are two likely candidates - the hydraulic pump and the alternator. Both of those on mine and my Dads Xantia whine a bit.

When they're first started theres quite an audible whirring/whining noise from the alternator as it tries to charge the battery but after a few minutes that noise drops right back to fairly quiet.

The hydraulic pump can also be noisy, if you turn the steering while stationary on concrete/seal it puts a lot of load on the pump, and if the pump is noisy it will whine a lot louder while you do this. If turning the steering makes the whine you're talking about louder it could be the pump.

My mums 1993 1.9TD also has a somewhat whiney hydraulic pump, and that was claimed by the previous owner to have been replaced only a year before mum bought it....

All the Xantia's I've heard have had these two sources of whining to a greater or lesser degree so I'm not sure how quiet it should be when normal. As long as its not too bad then its probably nothing to worry about. (But wait for some opinions from others here as well)

I doubt whether it would be a noisy fuel pump, the days of mechanical fuel pumps are long gone, and the Xantia most probably has an in-tank electric fuel pump. (Have never needed to track it down)

There are no separate lift pumps on citroen Diesels with mechanical injection pumps - first stage of the injection pump is in fact a lift pump - which is why they are so good at collecting air!

Later HDI's have an electric low pressure pump in or around the tank.

Opps.... forgot he was talking about a diesel. My brain is firmly engaged in petrol mode.... so disregard my comments about the fuel pump.

Hi Dave, releasing the tension on your pump/alternator drivebelt and seeing if the noise goes will help eliminate the cause, if the noise is still present then perhaps the cambelt and its pulleys may be worth inspecting for wear... best wishes, martin ( I'm assuming you don't have A/C?)

It did start whining after I tensioned the multirib belt. It doesn't change sound with steering, only with engine speed. I'm having a new cambelt/tensioner/waterpump fitted next week at a citroen specialist so they'll have to take off the multirib and retension it. I'll see if that cures it

The power steering did make a noise before I tightened the belt.
