OK my car has been at the garage for sometime now , the high pressure fuel pump packed in

This has been repaired by a bosch specialist and is fine !

The problem is now that it fired up once ran and died again , there is an auto electrician scratching his head at the problem.

There are no fault codes showing up

Any ideas

Its not a fuel problem / glowplugs....

Are you absolute definite that its not the fuel pump packed up again ?

Not because I dis-trust the work done. But simply because these HDI fuel pumps are known to be un-reliable.
Really sounds like a valid option to me.

Hi to all,

Here is my story / nightmare of the last 2 months.

My Xantia HDi stopped out of the blue. No apparent reason at all.
In-situ I changed the CR pressure sensor, checked the inertia sensor and changed the RPM pickup. Engine still refused to fire-up. We took the fuel filter out and found lots of water and crap inside. Filter had been renewed 2 months earlier.

Then I called the local citroen mechanic. A friend of mine. He came and well, had no clue, so took the car home.

At home he changed the injectors, but could do nothing more to make the engine work so off went the car to the local citroen stealer. There they did all possible diagnosis, and well, we were all led to believing that it could only be the high pressure pump.

So I asked permission and went to the broker and they replaced the pump by the second hand one. The engine finally fired up but after 2 minuted stopped and did not fire-up again. After lots of discussion I forced them to do a forensic diagnosis on both pumps. Both of them have packed up.

Bottomline: If the high pressure pump gives up on you, find out why!!!
In my case, the crap inside the fuel tank is so much that it destroyed the "new" pump...
Also, it looks like the pumps do not really appreciate long periods of time without being used. Be careful...

The high pressure pump in a HDI engine works under such extreme pressures, and therefore has to be very well made to deal with the pressures. The pump is very sensitive, and has to have clean fuel supplied to it. If it pumps any poor quality, or contaminated fuel it will damage it. The diesel also lubricates, and cools the pump, and the rest of the common rail injection system.

I understand that crap in the tank can damage pumps, but my question would be why have a fuel filter that does not filter the fuel properly?

I'd be interested in finding out if a better inline filter would help reduce these problems. Citroen need another kick up the arse as the HDI fuel pump problems are as common as the old XUD head gasket Headache!!!
