406 towbar 12S socket

Post by rj.kennedy »

I have a 99 V 406HDi estate and want to add a 12S socket to the towbar. Haynes shows fuse F15 in the fascia fuse box as "Battery +ve towing socket". This implies power is already wired to the back of the car. Does anyone know where? There is an unused connector in the NS rear wing (CD multiplayer I think) and another in the OS rear wing (use unknown). Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Richard

Use a test lamp on the unknown connector in the O/s wing. If it's live with the engine running and dead with the key switched to off, then it might just be the plug you want. Test again, having removed the fuse first. If it indicates dead with the engine on and off, then that's the connector you're looking for. When I wired my Xantia for 12S, I ran three fused, heavy duty wires from the battery to the boot, ending in relays for the fridge and caravan battery charging.

Thanks for the reply. I think the route you took with the Xantia is the safest bet. I'll just have to find a way of getting the cable installed.

When I wired my Xantia, I took three 17amp wires from the battery, through an additional fuse panel, with the three wires contained in a length of plastic tube. I passed the bunch down through the engine bay as far as the underside of the car. I then put them into a trunking, which on the Xantia covers the fuel and hydraulic pipes. When the three wires reached the rear of the car, I brought them through a grommet into the boot area. I fitted the relays at the back of a small 'glove box' in the boot. This method was easier that bringing them through the car.
