Valve clearance

Unread post by Sturdybloke »

Evening to all. Im looking for the valve clearance both int and exh for a 1769cc Diesel Turbo Bx power unit. As im in the middle of a HG change I thought that I might as well do the tappets at the same time (as the head has been skimmed and hot pressure tested I have to do them anyway). If you have the clearances I would be very gratefull to know them. Thanks all the same - Anthony.

Inlet is 0.15mm +/- 0.05mm
Exhaust is 0.30mm +/- 0.05mm

Amusingly, although this is supposed to be a metric engine, the shims are in thousandths of an inch (0.0254mm), but sold to the nearest metric equivalent!
This is not a signature.

Clearances Cold are INLET 0.15 +- 0.08mm

EXHAUST 0.30 +- 0.08mm

These are best done with the head on the kitchen table, a micrometer and your feeler gauges, really you need the Haynes or similar, When repairing one my personal record is cam in/out of head sixteen times! I can do it faster now though :)

its not complete

I think the phrase is tough titty!!!! First come first served. Once I have removed the shims I wont put the bucket, cam or cam cover back - to show that this engine has been "got at" and that it's only fit for parts only and not a running unit (as is the usual case in breakers yards) - Anthony.

Given the amount of time needed to strip the shims out of an engine, the probability that they'll mostly be original, and all nearly the same size (since the engines are built on an automated production line)and not waht you need, you'd surely be better off actually measuring what you need, and ordering them from the dealer, or your local engine shop. You'll probably end up doing that anyway, when you find you haven't got what you need....

You never find the thin ones that you need :) , on the sixteen times occasion I had to have two shims machined thinner just to get a clearance to enable me to measure something! my pet engineering shop then milled shims to my exact reqquirements.

Thats exactly the problem. After grinding in the valves & seats you have to use thinner shims. Probability to find useful shims from wreck engines is then near zero. They will always be within the "new engine" standard thickness range.

BTW : try grind down manually a shim on emery paper. What happens :?:

The shims are case hardened and if you reduce them in thickness by grinding you will reduce the surface hardness and therefore will be changing shims on a more regular basis!! Far better to buy new.
