Xantia Driver's Window Woes...

Hi there - I've got a 94 Xantia 1.9TD - just under 200k on the odometer.

I got into it this evening, wound down the drivers (electric) window halfway. As I went to wind it back up, it didn't move, but made a clacking sound (a bit like an electric screwdriver when you exceed the torque setting). Wound it the rest of the way down, then raised it again. It got to the same point then stopped and made the noise again.

I pulled the window up a bit by hand (the motor was still running in 'one touch' mode) and it seemed to rise OK, but made the same sound when it got to the top - it continued to make the noise until I momentarily wound it down then back up.

It being -2 C or so, I decided that the wisest course was to leave it as it was for the moment...

The window wasn't frozen up or anything, and worked as advertised on the way in to work this morning.

So - any ideas? Is this a fault that rings a bell with anybody? Should I be thinking in terms of a new (ie from a breaker) motor? Lifting mechanism?

Any help appreciated...

The teeth go on the winder motor, mine did it too.

Do you happen to know if I can just replace the motor, or does the whole mechanism have to be fitted? - I'm hoping to go to a breaker tomorrow to get whatever I can to fix it...

I've had the same problem, and replaced the entire mechanism - you'd have to remove it to replace the gear, and it's more or less designed not to be repaired.
For once, if you follow Haynes instructions to the letter, it's a pretty easy job!

thanks for the offer, but I'm all the way over in Norfolk, I'm afraid. I've found a local breaker who wants £35 for the whole thing (off the car) - so I'll be looking at doing the job next weekend...

I'd suggest that you take the replacement one off the car yourself.
As always with these fiddly jobs, you can experiment with the best way to go about it without worrying about breaking anything

The winder on my '94 drivers door did exactly the same thing. They had several Xantias in the scrap yards and not one had a drivers winder in so it must need replacing fairly commonly. I did manage to get a passenger side winder (all of the Xantias I looked at had them so it was cheap). I took the motor and steel cable off it and put that onto the drivers side slider mechanism, and the window was fixed.

Mine did this a few weeks ago. The steel cables are rusting through inside the motor housing.

I bought two universal inner brake cables from Wilkinsons (80p each I think) and took the whole thing apart and replaced the original innards. No idea how long it will last, but it works really well at the moment
