2.1 TD - Intercooler

Unread post by Adstar »

Thanks to a very light work load I have a lot of time for random thoughts at the moment.

My most recent one is: If the block and basic mechanics of the 2.1 TD engine is the same as the 1.9, why does it not have the intercooler?!

My initial guess is that it has something to do with either the workings of the 12v head, or the limited space under the various bonnets it has been squeezed.

Now that you are all thinking about this, is it possible, and how hard would it be? Would the extra power be worth all the extra effort?

Just a thought!

Follow the intake pipe from your intake manifold back. Where does it come from........

No way! your not gonna make a monkey out of me are you?! Im gonna look now and see (well when I get home and top up the wiper fluid!)

I have been working on the theory that it would be sat on the top of the engine like the 405s are....

Grrrrr

A dangerous (and incorrect) assumption.

So, shall I assume that the bannanas are on me and that I don't need to bother looking for the intercooler which is obviously present somewhere in the engine bay!?

It is after all too cold to be going on a wild goose chase, even if the said goose is already cooked!

I shall just wait in anticipation for my next random thought!

I think "somewhere" can be narrowed down a little. Since the intercooler is fed from the turbocharger, feeds the intake manifold, and must be in good cold airflow, there are very few locations that it can be.

(Unless you have a Renault Megane TD... their Intercooler is in the most bizzare location)

Following pipework will reveal all.

My little tree is quite nice. Lots of bananas for monkeys like me...

I finded it nestling next to the radiator.

Just shows I should check my random thoughts before I ask too many questions!

I wonder what I will think of next!
