hypothetically speaking

Unread post by oscarloco »

I went drag racing a few days ago and was able to beat a Honda Civic but a Yaris TS beat me  So I was thinking, in order to increase the power of my car, is it possible to (if I could get a hold of the parts):

1) Install the intake manifold of the ZX 16 and lock it in the high power configuration

2)Replace the cilynder head with the one found in the ZX 16V

3)Replace both components.

What would I need, besides the manifold and the head, to succesfully complete each modification? Are they possible? Would I need to modify some other things?

Maybe, but I would have to replace the ECU also.

You'll have to change the ECU anyway if you fit a 16 valve head. Whilst it will probbaly run you won't get the improvement you require without re-calibrating it.

That's true and thats why I ask what would I need to do. I think the easier mod would be replacing the intake manifold but then again I ask, would it work with the ACAV valves in the "power" mode?

I think these valves are to vary the size of the inlet manifold. At low revs a small manifold functions better but for full power a large one is needed. To make a tractable engine that pulls well over a wide power band the twin inlet manifld controlled by the ACAV valves is used.

For racing use it may be possible to use the wide one only but for road use I'd think it would be horrible and you'd probably have a car that wouldn't idle and would only pull over about 4000 RPM

What about using the "soft" setting for daily driving (since in city traffic I barely rev the engine) and the "power" setting for track use?

I've given thought to do-it-myself nitro. We are talking short bursts, so economy is not a big deal. The nitro effectively supplies the extra oxygen ... just throw in some extra fuel by installing an injector before the inlet divides. Switch on dash ; in series with switch operated by full throttle opens Nitro solenoid valve (flow controlled by pressure regulator) and at same time holds open extra injector. Can get proportional pressure control valves if you want to get all sophisticated, but will then need feedback of throttle and revs to a summing junction on servoamplifier. Up to 40% boost is said to not affect engine longivity. And I wont tell the ECU if you don't.

Just buy an earlier 1.9 16v XU from a bx 16v or 405 mi16 mk1 and put that in. 160bhp and ally so far lighter than the awful iron 150/155bhp lump in the zx 16v/306 s16/405 mi16 mk2. I have seen a couple of zx's with one fitted. Not quite as simple a job as in a 205/309/visa due to wiring but it is possible

Yeah, iron sucks. By the way, I have seen your Visa in action on your website and I can say that your car rocks  and you sure can drive.

heh thanks. Season has finished now so the winter work begins. Just got hold of a peugeot sport sump baffle as I will be running mega sticky slicks next year and changing all the spring rates etc. It should be a lot quicker!

Yes Iron sucks, still an ok engine I guess and bit more low down torque but 1.9 is the best one :)
