Resonance noise and clonking sounds - Citroën ZX

Unread post by janneman63 »

There is a resonance noise in my ZX when I accelerate in first and second gear and then, when I have reached my cruising speed, it (almost disappears).
There is also a rather heavy CLONK from somewhere under the rear part of my car whenever I start the engine.
These sounds appeared quite suddenly when I was out driving, suddenly they stopped for a while and now they have returned again...:(
Could it be the exhaust hitting the body somewhere...or could it be something even nastier...

Not sure what you mean "Resonance Noise" could you explain this a bit more.

The noise could be one of a few things : Exhaust or the Spare Wheel carrier or even the rear Rubber Sub Frame mounting bush's this sounds a
clonking when traveling over uneven surface's you can do a search on here for instructions how to diagnose and replace them.

Cheers

It's like a droning sound at acceleration (coupled with a slight vibration). On the other hand, the car is silent when going over bumps in the road and potholes.

Lots more information needed.............What is the spec of your ZX ?

Have you checked the points posted earlier ?
Does the Droning noise sound like its coming from the wheels ? Or the engine bay ?

cheers

Almost definately your exhaust about to give up.... mine did the same, found out the clonking was that the back box wasn't attached to the middle pipe any more and was banging against it. Resonating sound is gases coming out of the crack!

Well, the "mystery noise" now has been identified in a somewhat abrupt way: The back silencer fell off whilst doing a little check-up drive around the block. :(
The weld between silencer and pipe was rusted and since I gave the back-end of my exhaust a small kick before driving, that probably was all it needed to let go of the pipe completely after it just had been "hangin' on" for a while.
So you were right "Eskimoigloo"...

Actually, I fell off and I drove over it...it felt like the back end of the car did a little jump when that happened!
I just hope that nothing else was damaged in that process. I tried to check it just by having a quick look underneath and everything (except for the exhaust) seems to be okey.
Fortunately I was only two minutes away from home...and the garage which I use is nearby. Let's just hope that everything that is left can hang-on for that distance (about 5 minutes drive)

...and the car seems like new to me! :) All the strange noises and tiny vibrations are totally gone (with the added bonus of that I can actually hear my rear loudspeakers very well now!).
Repaired free of charge because the firm I bought it from a month ago took care of that financial transaction! :))
