Oh dear. the heater valve knob has come off, taking the shaft with it.(snap!)[xx(] I'll need to go in and fix it. What am I letting myself in for?

An absolute #$%^&* nightmare!!!
Check this out & save yourself a lot of time, agro & money. This is where I did it to mine which has been duplicated all over the World now & it not only works a treat, it's easy to do & looks original.

Tom - apart from Alan's very worthwhile suggestion to go direct to the other end of the control cable, you will need to check at the driver's footwell end of the cable that all is moving freely anyway.
Also, you could try visiting your friendly Eastleigh Scrappie (you'll want a new control knob or some way to fix it up cosmetically). By dismantling a complete heater/ventilation panel you'll get a much better idea of what is and isn't possible. Pull off the knobs towards you (with pliers), remove ashtray, coin tray and blanking plate, and unscrew the front of the panel. Behind you'll find a white plastic panel through which the spindles pass. Behind this are the spindles and cogs that Vanny refers to.
BUT whatever you do, don't unclip any of the cables from the back of your own heater/ventilation panel in haste as they're nigh-on impossible to refit successfully.
