Diesel Engine for a CX?
This might be a really stupid question........but thats never stopped me before in my life. Has anyone ever put a Bx/Xantia T/diesel engine in a CX? Really don't know whether the engine in this 22 is worth bothering with as its looking like its gonna be a H/gasket, timing chain and water pump as well as the H/matrix. (rest seems alright at the moment) My biggest problem and the one thats really bugging me is that although everyone says that the 22 is the easy entry level CX I can't seem to find any info or parts for the engine.....drawn a blank on the H/bolts and there's no info at all on the torque settings and the final tighten down.
So to be blunt I'm thinking if I gotta change the engine I might as well put a diesel in it which is what I wanted all along as well as the fact that all the parts would be available. Any ideas? Bows head to deflect ridicule and assorted laughter.

It would be much easier just to get a CX DTR Turbo II deisel engine... At least they fit physically in the space provided and will bolt to the gearbox.

Yes , Shane did think about that but seems there are a few more Td BX/Xant engines about. But it would be easy to just slot it in I s'pose. Malcolm, is the CX unit that much more powerful than the Bx/Xant unit then, it was just that as above they are more available and more modern that I thought they might cope.
If I was to do the swap am I right in thinking that I would only really have to 'add' the gloplug relays/timers etc. to the wiring and make the ign circuit redundant.............obviously new clutch ass........has anyone done this before? Thanks for the help so far. still not out of the question given the amount of work required to 'fix' this one.

Both of the Citroën independant's I use say the CX diesel mill is a better motor than any of the Puegeot XUD's. It was apparently used in some of PSA's commercials in the 90's.
Since I have had very good reliability from the PSA 2.1 and 2.5 turbodiesels, then the CX diesel must be exceptional.

Woah now - hang on guys - fitting an Xu engine in a CX - er NO!; Cx diesel engines being reliable - er NO [at least DTR2 ones]; NO info on 2.2 Douvrin engine - er YES!
Where to start? Do you think a Xantia engine would manage to move such a big heavy car as the CX? If you're going to make that kind of effort try fitting a 24V V6 lump...
Depending on who you talk to there are various stories and theories on the 2.5 Cx diesel lump - there's the old 'porous bore due to poor casting in India' story, but my personal experience after numerous head gaskets is the head was always the villain-of-the-piece with a crack between the valves on no1 cylinder - did find after a lot of heartache [& EXPENSE!!] that the water pump was actually weeping water and setting air locks that helped a dodgy head blow...
The douvrin 2.0 engine was largely the same unit from 1979 and the stroke was marginally altered to allow the same bored unit to reach 2.2 in about '85 for the s2 cars. The engine saw fitment in big Renaults as well as Citroen's Cx although the only engine of the era that saw fitment in any commercials then or later was the non turbo'd Cx diesel. A Russeck/Revue Technique or R20/25 Haynes will tell you what you need to know - there's also Cx manuals to download out there on the web, and if I find mine I could also e-mail you one if you're in a tight squeeze...
Don't all mail me at once mind...
I've not got the time to sit here typing at the moment as another car purchase becons but I'll mull over this thread and post further thoughts later...
All the best, Andrew

The CX series M2x diesel engine types are very different from the series XUD engines in physical layout and design. Its not just a question of what engine type "is the best". It really is a question of patience and time if you want to fit an XUD engine in a CX engine bay - cause it will need lots & lots of mechanical mods to fit.
Better try find a J5/Ducato/early C25/35 diesel engine that will fit the hole directly. But you will need a CX gearbox to get longer legs on the gear ratios.
BTW the CX does not weigh more than approx 1250Kg. What is the weight of a Xantia ?

Right, gotta say never weighed them but NO WAY is a CX lighter than a Xantia.
Second all that andmcit says is totally agree with, and whats more the 22 engine can be found in espaces, fuegos, 25's, 20's and probably others.
In the renaults its injected and elec ign and everything, with a bit of playing you could have a wonderful 22 engined CX. Honest.

Dont forget the drive shafts either, the are bound to be wrong length/diameter. I have done quite a number of diesel conversions in the past but they have all been rear wheel drive, I have succesfully shortened a number of prop shafts, but drive shafts are solid, not an easy job I would think.
I have owned three CX diesel Safari's and think them in many ways to be superior to the XM, except for the head gasket problem. I was changing them every 15k in my TD, with the mileage I was doing at the time, thats twice a year! I changed the head three times and eventaully took the engine out and had the block machined, the gasket still went, inthe same place!
The only thing I can say in its defence is that they were very easy to change in comparison to the XM as the engine leans forward and when you open the bonnet the head is looking at you.
I would like to see a CX with the 2.1 td engine from the XM, Xantia or 406 fitted, its about the same power/torque as the turbo 2, I am sure it would make a brilliant car.

The CX is in fact not as heavy as later Citroen models 8)Stinkwheel wrote:... but NO WAY is a CX lighter than a Xantia.

Look them up in data sheets ...
The all aluminium Douvrin Europe engine found in several car makes is A special engine type series again very different from the other 2 engines in question above ...

Diesel CX saloon 1390KG (says 'ere in the owner's book.)
Gazoline my friend. France's classic car mag of choice. Find a scrap diesel there. Turbo1 is probably best at 95 BHP the 2 can be trouble and the non turzzzzzzz....

Blimey, always pegged a CX as heavier, odd how modern cars got smaller but gained weight.
And Tom, the N/A CX may be slow but they will go all day with a big trailer behind, and relatively economcal too. They make a good old fashioned diesel clatter as well
