Wild daffodils seen during my morning run today

What did you do to upset the daffodils Jim?


I had a wander to a shop in the next village. There were a few daffs struggling up but on the whole very disappointing. Apart from my Polyanthus, these were all I saw:

That's a direct drive turbine. Large diameter rotor and no gearbox, very quiet and reliable. Looks as though its made out of Leggo though.

Just in time to squeeze these in today, spent the day sorting my laptop, the first job was to draw a screw plan to store the screws on while working on it:

then it was time to remove the screws:

and expose the inner secrets

It didn't take long to discover the broken fan housing

and spot the disintegrating centre pin in the power jack

so they were replaced and then the reassembly began only to discover the motherboard was cracked under the processor and the RAM sockets. Dammit!!!

I should have checked further before ordering the spares!

So out with the HDD and the RAM, the new fan, the DVD drive and power jack and into the stock bin with the rest.

A comprehensive search on ebay found me an almost identicle replacement which I was able to buy and collect this afternoon, the first proper usage of the new steed and excellent it was too. I got home at 5 and set about setting this one up as a clone of my original, with some adjustments to eliminate things which had been niggling me, and here it is making its first post!!

Pretty much this time last year I had a similar delve into the innards of a laptop.
My innovation was a bit less precise....An Ikea box and some coloured "lego" bricks to store the little screws in.

Well, I'm not an engineer

but according to you tube...its an easy fix....

Maybe I am an engineer after all One laptop kept going, fixed power jack with a bit of soldering and the broken hinge with araldite.....marginally chuffed with myself

I just stick the screws to a magnet then wonder where they came from on reassembly.
The Kamprad law always applies of course - one short or one too many.

That's what I used to do Steve,, well put them in a magnetic dish to be precise, until I wrecked a soundcard by putting a slightly overlength mounting svrew through the case. Now, because there is very little difference in the screws, I use the 'screwmap' to stop me doing it again. It has a secondary purpose where laptops are concerned in that it also makes sure I don't put a screw into a pc board mounting hole which is also meant to be a case securing hole.

I got my Lexia laptop from the workshop (after about 15 years) and this is what it shows. Any suggestions?

The first thing I'd do is connect a normal monitor to the vga port and see if you get a full picture, if you do then a screen issue, if you don't a video card/motherboard problem. Then it is a question of economic repair? Or use the monitor instead?

Probably not worth repairing Mick. It got very damp in my workshop, I left it in the warm for a few days and have also left it on for sometime but no improvement. I have another one but this one has the Lexia programme on it and in view of the problems I had installing it I'm not keen on doing it again.

Its probably 15 years or more since I downloaded it, would it have the X7 on it?

I wouldn't think so Peter but I'm no expert, you'll need a much better informed lexia man than me. I only ever used mine for turning off the tyre pressure monitor and a bit of rough running diagnosis. Hopefully someone (eg Marc ) will be able to confirm that but I think it is worth connecting to a monitor to be sure, and possibly to get the actual lexia details off it. If you don't have a monitor your tv may have a vga socket but I suspect we are into grandma and egg sucking there .

If the Lexia stuff is on the hdd can you not just swap the hdd into another laptop?

Try putting the (opened case) laptop into a container of rice for a few days. Rice is very good at absorbing moisture, and has even saved mobile phones that have been dropped into watery containers (of various types).
