Citroen never made a road-going "customer" version
of any
of their rally cars, that is why they failed to capitalise on it. We got the "C4 by Loeb", which is a pretty poor effort really, being a "basic" version
of the standard VTS - without such niceties as the CD changer and Xenon lights!.. Imagine if they'd made a 300bhp 4wd tarmac-melting version instead, or
of the DS3.
Ford made the Escort RS, then the Sierra 4x4 Cosworth, then the Escort 4x4 Cosworth, all
of which were proper rip-snorting cars
Audi made the Quattro Coupe,
of course, in 10v and 20v turbo forms.
Peugeot made the 205GTi successful off the back
of it's mental Group B car
Lancia - we all remember the Integrale rally car and the Delta Integrale
production car.
Mitsubishi? Evo anyone? They don't even compete any more and people still buy the thing..
Subaru - they've made boring Japanese saloons for years, and sold so so many Imprezas based on only 3 WRC drivers and 3 Constructors titles..
Even the Metro 6R4 made some
of us buy an MG Metro..
Original Mini Cooper, successful from it's racing and rallying heritage..
Saab 2-smokes driven by old Erik Carlsson..
The list goes on, but..
Citroen? They gave us a slightly worse version
of a standard road car. Top marketing there..
