Pulled and pushed and shoved and heaved and can't get gearbox to sit against the block. About 15mm away. Pulled box off again, phone shoved in to check alignment of clutch and hole in flywheel= seems good. Annoying.

Sun baking me now, hot!

Nice one , I'd say that will do a better job than cable ties especially being a diesel aswell move force and all that good stuff..

Got the box into place (after a good hour and a half fighting it!)
Engine and gearbox mounts all back on.
One (long) driveshaft back on, and wishbone reassembled.
other short shaft needs outer boot replacement then can go back on.

To do:
  • Driveshaft fixed and on,
  • other wishbone back together.
  • gearbox oil in,
  • bleed clutch,
  • check gear selector alignment ok (turns out what I loosened first in the cables is for length adjustment!).
  • Tighten both hub nuts.
  • Arch liners in.
  • Decide if under tray can be fitted or more pre work on that.
  • Battery tray, ECU, battery, air filter housing.
  • Maybe brake bleeding (depending on how much fluid level dropped, as capping clutch line wasn't that effective so a fair bit lost. Fresh brake fluid always a good idea.

Yes, pleased with that clamping effort. Not sure how long lived the stretch boot will prove to be - the rubbery material feels very thin!

It is good of you to post all this and I find it interesting/enjoyable to read. A pity the work needs doing but the car will be good for a long time afterwards.

Oh gosh, I feel for you Andrew... You must feel a bit like I did newly arrived in your country and trying to learn the language

Another case of two countries being divided by a common language; at last you down-under have a 'U' in your alphabet and use it properly  :)

All very good work accomplished Matt :D

No, there isn't one on this generation of 308. I didn't get the box fully out (couldn't quite seen to get it through) and doing it again I'd probably consider dropping the subframe....

...though considering how crusty stuff is, that could be a can of rirm in its own right.

Brightening slightly (and my two boys packed off with their grandpa for the day) so about to head out. CV boot job first so no pictures whilst elbow derp in CV grease!

I realise this is reminiscent of bolting the stable door............... but I came across this and thought it was relevant to the current work and of interest to readers: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/366416577021 :)

Ha, that was optimistic!

CV boot job done. Video of the other end in a moment - an odd "failure" at that end.
