RD45 upgrade for Peugeot 308

Post by xantia_v6 » 04 Dec 2018, 22:57

I am investigating which variant of RD4 and display are fitted and check what components would be needed to upgrade my 308 CC for RD45. The VIN is VF3**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff] .

I previously did not think it worth the effort, but had a nightmare day yesterday trying to drive across town while people kept phoning me.

Based purely on age I think your screen will be new enough. I'm not sure if the software version can be checked on servicebox. You need software version V.71 or higher for the RD45.

OK, a quick check with Diagbox shows that my display seems to be 96 666 313 80 (additional reference 96 758 595 80) version 72.01.
The existing RD4 is 96 650 540 77 (additional reference 96 750 284 77) version 96.00.
A potential oddity is that the Geographical Zone is set to Asia, I don't know if that is a software or hardware configuration.

Having done a bit more searching, I have realised that the 308CC and RCZ have a piano-black (glossy) finish on the radio facia, so the replacement RD45 is a bit rare.

Can anyone tell me (or point to a picture of) the location of the hands-free microphone when factory-fitted to a 308CC?

This one with the correct front panel https://fr.aliexpress.com/item/Suitable ... 3c00RtGgFL was available yesterday, but I put it into my basket, and overnight it became unavailable. It did seem to have only one antenna port, but my car has 2 antennae.

It is easy to spot the 308CC / RCZ versions of the RD4 / RD45, as they don't have "MP3" printed above the CD slot.

Does anyone know if the RD4 and RD45 front panels are interchangeable? Then I could get a more common variant of the RD45 and just swap my front panel onto it.

I have always wondered this myself. What I do know is that the front panels themselves have their own firmware and potentially could not play nicely with a headunit of a different age.

I am now in communication with one of the Chinese vendors, he says that the plastic front panels are interchangeable from RD4 to RD45, and they do it all the time. I think that this explains a couple of things, firstly why there seem to be a preponderance of single tuner models available, even for fitments where the car would always have 2 antennas, and why they warn about cosmetic scratches on radios removed form new cars (the RD45 is new, but the front panel is recycled from an RD4).

This vendor says that he can supply a 2 antenna version on request.

I have taken the plunge and ordered an RD45 from China, it probably won't be here until after Christmas. The vendor has been very good answering questions.

Could you share which supplier this is? Hebei Weima or another from AliExpress?

Yes that is the vendor.

The item that I have ordered is https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Genuine ... 2746EKMoSc, which the photos show to have 2 antennae connector plus digital broadcast antenna (I don't know if that implies DAB support).

This is the location of component 8482 : radio telephone microphone and its interconnects on the way to the back of the stereo according to SEDRE. Having said that, not sure how much the images look like a CC!

Thanks for that. I had more or less figured it out already. I have found the microphone location. If factory fitted, the microphone wiring is part of the main harness up to the roof console, but I have ordered a microphone with cable (apparently from some other PSA application) https://www.aliexpress.com/store/produc ... 3aafEJZAcJ so will run that alongside the main harness. I have found the instructions for removing the trim on a CC, which are of course a bit different to anything else.

I have not completely decided where to mount the USB connector. As I will probably leave a USB stick mounted in it, it needs to be in a locked compartment (for parking the car with the roof down). I will probably have a flying lead in the glovebox.

The RD45 arrived today.
I connected it and configured the radio and screen with Diagbox, and a brief test indicates that most functions are working.
I spent some time swapping the 308 front panel from the RD4 to the RD45. Electrically it is compatible, but as my RD4 was manufactured by VDO and the RD45 by Continental, there are several differences in the way the panel fits onto the body of the head unit, and some plastic clips and metal tangs needed to be removed or trimmed before the panel would sit in the correct place. A nice touch is that the mute button from the RD45 control panel fits into the RD4 panel and is a good aesthetic match.

I will fit the microphone and USB socket tomorrow and test everything more thoroughly.
