What Oil - Picasso Xsara 1.6 HDI VTX 07

Post by Andle »

Hi,

Car needs an oil change. It's done 80k.

National tyres and Autocare - are recommending this:

http://www.fuchsbenelux.com/products/ti ... sae-10w-40

I'm unsure if it is the best one for an older engine - one that I need to keep going for a while.

I ask the oil / lubricant experts to help open up a discussion on the topic - so we can all learn something by exploring the subject matter.

Q: For this car - given this age - what oil would you recommend?

My genuine thanks to anyone willing to contribute and explore this topic for older engines.

Andle.

Have a look at the link here on the Wiki - it has all the PSA recommended oils for your car based on engine and conditions:

I really appreciate the response Marc.

I've had a look at the link you provided.

The information is detailed and quite dense.

I suspected that since all the oils recommended for the DV6TED4 engines are Total Oils - I should visit the Total website and this was the result:

I am not too worried about the cost. I want to get the oil that will have the best effect on the engine for the 12months it's in there - given the engines age/milage.

I am travelling from interview to interview, and will have no other means of travelling - if the car konks out on me.

It has started producing white smoke from time to time - it hesitates from cold start - and is exhausting a foul smell.

I'm hoping a service will get me by until I clinch a job in the next few weeks.

I would really appreciate it if you could help me choose an oil that will give me the best chance of keeping her ticking along for the moment.

There are too many here for me to choose from - to know whats best.

5 w30 in the UK, and half the recommended change intervals to preserve the turbo.

Unless it's been superceded, INEO ECS is the one for these engines. Others are ok in a pinch. Best to go for 10,000mile oil changes as a minimum.

Thank you for responding.

Please elaborate - how to understand - which has been superseded by the other?

I'm honestly surprised at how many options are available, and how difficult it would be for a normal member of the public to get a good handle on the choices avaliable.

Simply the number of choices available - without an easy way to understand the differences - is making me feel really dumb (I'm not).

Even after using the Lube Advisor on the Total Oil website - It's presented six options - without explaining - which ones are better than the other!

Interested in any knowledge others are willing to share.

My thanks to all that are contributing.

Just checked - doesn't say. Have at it!

http://www.citroen.co.uk/owner-services/maintenance/oil

http://www.total.co.uk/lubricants/autom ... visor.html

So - still need to knuckle in on the final choice peep's.

How do I choose from the selection the lub adviser chucks out?

5W-30 is best for this climate, I'm told. Therefore the Quartz INEO ECS 5W-30 is the preferred option.

DO NOT put 10w40 oil in the car if it has a DPF if in doubt go to a main dealer buy the oil off him using your VIN/REG and keep the receipt, I got the photo off autodata

In my handbook (printed and up to date when car was new 2005) they recommend an older 5w-30 Total oil. Since then, the newer ECS was developed (and probaly ones before that) and is the most current that meets the demands of this engine AFAIK. I don't know the exact specifications to go for but low-ash (saps) is required for DPF-equipped engines and the ECS is the best I know of.

You bring up a very interesting point. The books are updated yearly. Is there a way to get hold of a PDF copy of the latest version for Citroens'.

I know many other car manufacturers allow you to download the updated literature that usually accompanies a car in the 'New Owner Pack'?
