C5 heater

Post by daviemck2006 »

My heater is being weird. I don't think it's the usual c5 problem of the box of tricks beside the clutch pedal. The drivers side won't change the heat setting it seems to be whatever the outside air temperature coming through whatever the temperature is set at, whilst the passenger side is working perfectly. It'ssuper cold here tonight and with both sides set at 22 drivers side blowing cold and passenger side nice and warm. Outside temperature showing 5. I seem to remember something about flaps sticking but can't find the info. Can anyone help on where to find them and how to fix them?

This refers to the passenger side but I guess the drivers would be the same, search C5 heater flaps will bring up plenty of posts.

Hi Davie

Lots of us on here have come up against this problem with the heater temperature flaps.

Citroen do a replacement flap set for around £65 but the hassle is in fitting them. Some say you can cut out the side of the unit but thats really only possible on the passenger side and is a lot of fiddling around. Alternative is then to remove dashboard. That's what I did and it's not as bad as you may think and there are some shortcuts you wont find in the Haynes manual (oh what a surprise!!!)

Take a look at the posts below (and any others you can find) and then maybe come back with your thoughts. Bear in mind also that the C5 & 407 have the same heater unit.

Don't despair...there is an answer out there!

So this looks like it's gonna be a total pain in the butt. I have searched a few now and the passenger side seems to be doable through the glove box, it's the drivers side that I have got gone which looks very like a dash out job, and may well be the reason the car was ultra cheap. I won't be doing that personally. I'm usually in car myself and can get it heating up just with pass side on max, but that'snot Iin winter time. Mmmmmmmmmmmmm decisions.

Does the C5 have heated seats? If not, every so often Lidl or Aldi do car bits, which can include heated seat cushions. I will PM you (as well as post up the details on my relevant thread) the next time either of them do.

Im going to have a look to see if I can swap the air hoses going to the footwells. If I can then it's a bodge but will give me heat :) I was going to be on the lookout for heated leather so will I spend on leather or fixing the heater properly? Depends on if the bodge works or no!

Thanks for this; I ended up doing it the 'proper way'; with the dash and heater box coming out.

It was surprisingly logical and easy really. I stripped the heater box, cleaned the existing flaps and the whole box moulding, lubricated the distribution flaps (and the new heater flaps), cleaned out the mouldy evaporator and put everything back together. Even better, it all works. Yay!

The main tip that I benefitted from is there being no need to remove neither steering wheel nor airbags. The column is only held in by 3 bolts (plus the UJ nut and bolt).

So, don't be scared of the job really. I found it great to work on the heater box in my warm garage, rather than spending hours crouched in a footwell, trying to cut into its side, which has been suggested.

The job is going to be covered in Car Mechanics magazine soon, so spread the word!

Glad to have helped out on this (especially the steering column and airbag tip which I discovered when I did mine)
Sharing information and tips is what the forum is all about.

I'm waiting until MOT is passed hopefully on Tuesday first time before I think about the heater box. Funds are tight so it will depend on how much cash it takes for the test.

It took me around 3 days because I was swapping the heater box from one car to another but the actual dash and heater box removal, repair and refitting could easily be done over a weekend, especially once I discovered you don't need to strip out the airbags and disassemble the steering column. That alone would have taken at least another 4 or 5 hours.
It sounds daunting, especially if you read it in the Haynes manual, but as long as you're handy with a set of tools it's not that difficult.

Not sure which issue of the magazine it will be in, as it depends on the editor's schedule. Possibly within the next 2-3 months.

I'll send the text and image to him later today. - I'm just doing a final sub-edit.

The job took me a weekend - but that included doing the photography as well - and it was my first time doing it.

Basically, it's lots of small, easy stages, not one single nightmarish one. The other tip I can recall is label the small heater box wiring loom, so everything is refitted in the same order.
