Special Tool

Post by Timmy69 »

Hi Guys
As some of you know i was in the process of changing my front pads when i found out that Halfords had given me the wrong ones. What i want to know is.Is there a special tool for winding the piston back in and if so what are they called and where do i get one ?.And what methods do you all use to wind it back in,if you haven't got said tool.

Thanks in advance
Timmy

 I used a flat bladed screwdriver with the end taped over in case it slipped out of the slot, turning the piston about 60 degrees at a time. Took a while, but was cheaper than a special tool.

Tool can be had from Halfrauds for about £30 IIRC, or it appears exactly the same tool as Halfrauds sell can be had for £12 via Amazon

It screws back Timmy...

I have made a very successful rewind tool (ask Xac!)

It's basically a piece of square bar the size of the piston cutouts welded to a cheap 22mm socket. The length of the bar is juts a little more than the width of the piston face. Wind them back with your socket set ratchet bar.

I'll take a picture of it later and post it up.

The tool also doubles as a special tool for a 4HP20 gearbox for which it was originally made!!!

the wind back tools you see for sale were designed specifically for wind back caliper pistons, they will also work on push back pistons alike,

all cars with calipers on all 4 wheels have wind back pistons were the hand brake mechanism is in the caliper ( this is not just a citroen system )

the proper tool also puts just enough pressure on the piston to aid its retraction

depends if a XANT you just need the right hand threaded tool, but a C5 will need both as one caliper winds back clock wise and the other anti clock
