Xantia-Steering Rack Removal

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

Thanks for the help on this thread the basic subject of which was removal of a power steering rack from my Xantia

Xantia ressurrection? the difficult bit

I have already taken a rack out of the xantia I have just dismantled.

Having half the car dismantled helped make the job easier-the steering column for instance just came out in one big bit with steering wheel still attached. Paul (citroenxm) offered this advice
The steering colum in the car has to come off the lower UJ rod, then you can take the lower UJ off the pinion... 6x 6mm allen bolt holds that on... accessable through the wheel arch..

How much does the steering column inside the vehicle have to be dismantled to achieve this? Is it just the nut shown here, or do I have to do a fuller dismantling? The car does have an airbag-is this going to come into play if the fuller dismantling is required?

Not much Neil, just remove the four nuts under the dash holding the steering column and after disconnecting the ignition switch, airbag, stalks and radio controls the whole column will drop down and it can then be pulled forward, disconnecting the loosened UJ on the pinion valve...

Leave the column all connected together inside the car and undo the joint
at point 2/3 in this piccy:

You can draw the column into the cabin clearing the rack.

Thanks for the replies

I think my picture of the nut is the one at point 2/3 in the diagram.

Haynes does carry a page of dire warnings when working in the vicinity of the airbag, but looks like its not going to be disturbed this time.

if you have any concern's regarding the air bag,

just disconect the battery and wait 20 min's,

now undo the 4 tourque's screws going into the back of the steering wheel which hold the air bag on, then pop the plug out on the back,

also store the air bag face upwards,

Fan of melatonin-rich songstresses? Shirl's not a patch on this one.

Anyhow - to return to our original topic - if you first loosen the inside clamp and then remove its bolt, once the pinion input spline clamp is similarly undone, the short intermediate shaft may be pushed up and away from the rack, freeing it completely.

I have that Donna Summer LP, from when it was originally released and seemed quite scandalous :)
In pristine condition too, only played a couple or three times.

No I haven't attempted the steering rack job yet, but I am expecting it to be more difficult than removing it from the old xantia which is now completely dismantled and the shell sent off to EMR metals at Blaydon.

After the event I have found out more than I ever wanted to know about the End of Life Regulations 2003 et al and the requirement to send an end of life vehicle to a ATF (approved........t???.....facility).

I followed the same approach as I did last time I scrapped a car and phoned Elvis to take it away :D , there appears to be a bit more to it these days thanks to our european directives.

Nothing to add re the Shirley B v Donna Summer debate, although unable to to compete on looks alone, I am more of a Joni Mitchell appreciator as far as music goes :D

Thanks Neil
