It's not the cable?
With the engine off the cluth isn't rotating, you're just releasing a stationary clutch. With the engine running the clutch is spinning, so if you're getting a different feeling clutch it's likely to be caused by one of the clutch components. I would imagine you're probably feeling some sort of vibration.
