Wow :D That was an interesting read Neil... Especially about a locomotive always kept in light steam at Hawick in case the doctor was needed at Riccarton - there being no roads going to Riccarton..

There's certainly plenty of if and hats off to the people who put such detailed records together and make it available on the net, even down to those examples of tickets. Don't know if you noticed but the one I picked out as an example was for a bike and passenger from St Boswells to Duns. Thanks for taking the time to click on the link Jim, and delighted you found it interesting :-D

I could not resist grabbing this image off Farcebook...

It was published for the Class 37 in the foreground rather than the Transporter Bridge....

The tanks contain Hydro Cyanic Acid - BR's deadliest train. Hence the barrier wagons between the tanks and the locomotive...

More deadly than the nuclear flask trains I'd think...

Not this time Jim, that's a road bridge but on the South side the Newcastle-Carlisle Railway hugs the the Tyne round that stretch from Wylam through Prudhoe and Mickley to Stocksfield/Bywell. There is a lovely former railway bridge
at Wylam where a branch line from the Newcastle-Carlisle Line went to North Wylam and down past George Stephenson's Cottage on the North side of the river and onwards to Newcastle. Some time ago I posted up a literal journey along that branch and over the bridge which is a little reminiscent of the Tyne Bridge/Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Here's my original post.

Been mentioned on here a few times, and have been there many times, but today took the back lane to Prudhoe and discovered this new view of the River Tyne Railway Crossing to the former North Wylam Station and beyond to Newburn Scotswood and Newcastle. It was opened in 1876. The wrought iron bridge has an 80 yard arch from which the deck is suspended from vertical ties. It is believed to be the first of its kind in the world, and claimed inspiration for Australia's Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Its now part of a nice walking route which takes you down past George Stephenson's birthplace at Wylam Northumberland on the old railway line. What a joy it was to discover amongst the old 1960's transport cine films which Alan Snowdon has put together on his youtube channel, a footplate journey on the Tyne Valley Line via North Wylam, with the bridge being used as it was intended.

Ahh! I think that answers my question of why the signalbox was perched up so high and on a bridge... Long visibility along the road to see when it was safe to close the level crossing to road traffic...

Whatever, it makes for a great bit of railway scenery :D
