Re: DIY Car Maintenance with function over finesse!!
Well I got stuck in this morning and as ever the first job was to remove the under engine covers, one each side, so I set about the 12 x 10mm bolts and got them all out (I did soak them yesterday! ) and removed the panels. Then I began removing the various banjos and only when I got to the last one on top of the gearbox did I discover it is a larger than all the others one!! Grrrrrrrrrr! So Plan B into operation -
Fortunately the oversize banjo has a perfectly good condition steel pipe from it which connected to the anti -vibration hose just a few inches away so I was able to remove that hose and then fit my new hose from there to the new banjo on the bottom of the radiator. The other two pipes were replaced fully with hose as planned and I only had to use a few cable ties and a homemade pipe suppport (ex snouted bottle top from a degenerating bottle of wood glue ) to keep them all free from potential rubbing on anything and the job was done. I went through the gearbox bleeding procedure and topped up the fluid, I had only lost about 30cc and the car now even pulls better and gearchanges are crisper so obviously the system leak was causing a drop in fluid pressure which has now been rectified!! One small error I made was to forget to remove the old pipe to hose spring clip before tightening the new one so I had to use a cable tie to stop it rattling along the pipe On the bad side while finishing the job I noticed that the power steering cooling loop pipes are in a similar condition, though not actually leaking, so they will be swapped out in due course!!

Re: DIY Car Maintenance with function over finesse!!
Hope the tester's corrosion observations are not serious Mick and any found can be easily sorted out...
Last year I spent some time drenching the underside of my Saxo in Bilt Hamber's finest anti-corrosion wax and an inspection this year shows it's still very good and only needed topping up in a few places I'd missed...
Some areas on y Saxo I caught just in time where the original underseal had failed or was in the process of failing...

Re: DIY Car Maintenance with function over finesse!!
Hopefully he is referring to the areas I hammerited for extra protection which is the grease or similar he is referring to I'll get a chance to put it on a 2 post lift soon and do what needs doing from angle grinder to wax oil etc. I'll fit a new pair of shocks at the same time and replace any thing that really needs it. Just need to wait for the two post to be free, currently has a long term project on it for chassis work, or so I'm told!!

Re: DIY Car Maintenance with function over finesse!!
Having got the MOT out of the way I can now move on to the next immediate project. As I said above I noticed the MX3's power steering cooler was looking exceedingly rusty and I went searching for a replacement. Unfortunately nothing to be found other than a factory back order at £162.79 + VAT. So I applied my inventive spirit to the problem and the result arrived today for the princely sum of £13.00:
It is from a different car but will fit with a lttle fettling as it connects to hoses which allows some scope for modification.
So I planned that job for tomorrow and realised I needed some power steering fluid so popped down to get it. When I got back I stood it beside the ATF I bought for the gearbox and this is what I had:
Personally I think that is pretty poor from the makers as the fluids are not the same and the difference is not exactly obvious!! Can you spot it?
Knowing that I may well pick up the wrong one at some point I have made my own labelling:
I just need a dry day now to get that sorted!!

I'm loving that cooler Mick Very pretty!
Yes, difference spotted. One's Dex II and the other is Dex. III... Dex. II is mineral based and the granddaddy of ATFs whilst Dex. III is the synthetic child... Supposedly backwardly compatible but drivers sill running ZF 4HP14 and 18 slushboxes will say otherwise...

Re: DIY Car Maintenance with function over finesse!!
It comes from a BMW 3 series so the quality is there too. A real bargain at £13 I thought!!

Yes I think you are right there Matt!! I just hope it performs as well in a proper car as it was designed to in a BMW

Oh I wouldn't hold its original destination against it!
I've just realised how to get over that issue: Get it in its new home like that = M for Mazda!

That would be good but unfortunately it wouldn't go in that way. The pipe ends have to point backwards to go round the radiator on the offside so only one way will work!!
