System Too Hot - Volume Reduced!?

Hi guys, this comes up whenever my radio has been on for a while "System Temperature Too Hot - Volume Reduced!?, even if volume is only around 50-70%. I wouldn't expect it to do this at any volume level to be fair so I'm guessing this a fault?

Anyone else had same issued, my vehicle is a C4 GP 2014 1.6eHDI

This means the system head unit is overheating and it reduces the volume to reduce the power to the internal amplifier to reduce the heat. This issue can be a problem when in colder months the cabin temperature heating is also set quite high, as this limits the cool air available inside the fascia where the unit is stored and leads to overheating.

Normally when the ambient temperature around the head unit returns to an acceptable level and the unit has cooled sufficiently, you will be able to increase the volume again.

There's not a lot of space behind modern dashes to circulate air and I've read of people fitting a small 12v computer fan to push more air around.

There's very little room behind mine - it is totally crammed Paul - so much so, I could hardly get the Head unit back in once I removed it to install the second USB port, so it really depends on the model. My C5 was the same as the NG4 unit was a double DIN sized unit.

ah ok thanks guys, quite a poor design that it over heats when volume is just moderate! I never had this issue in my old C4 GP which was 57 plate!

If the unit is overheating consistently without it being overly hot in the cabin, then your Head unit may be be damaged - or the internal fan in the head unit (if fitted) may not be working.

I had this problem in my 2018 Berlingo recently. It was really cold, so I had the heating on full blast and didn't turn it down when the temperature was fine. My mistake!

Now I'm trying closing the two central air vents (leaving the side vents open) once the temperature's reasonable. That way, I'm figuring that I'll remove the constant stream of newly hot air and just have static (warm) air around the unit. Not sure if this technique will be enough or whether I'll have to switch to foot well or windscreen heating only.

It's by design to reduce the internal amplifier output to reduce the heat inside the unit as you've now found out. It's going to be more of an issue in the winter months when you have the heating on much higher, where there is little to no cooler air inside the dash console so the unit heats up a lot more quickly internally. It's not so much an issue for those units with separate amplifier integrated into the bass box in the rear or under the floor.
