Its about time a story from the Derby Telegraph made its way into our deliberations on this thread.
https://www.derbytelegraph.co.uk/burton ... ck-4301085
The gist.....

Toyota have done it, historic record sales for June 2020, and led by their Hybrid stable.

Repeat the message often enough and it gets through. Toyota may be proved to be on the ball here.
Their job is to sell cars, and to do that they have to understand and target the market.

My assessment is
The public in general have got the message that 100% electric has a problem with range, and what happens if you run out.

The public have got the message that diesel in particular and petrol a bit less so are bad for the climate and pollution
So in spite of my own personal view of the self-charging hybrid, which does I have to concede run on 2 sources of power....Petrol and Gasoline to be precise..., the Toyota strategy shows early signs of producing results,

Their self-charging hybrid message, appears to address the car-buying public's needs, and overcomes their objections.

The Toyota runs on "two sorts of power", there is no faf of plugging in, or danger of running out, while at the same time being green as green can be when running on electric. :!:

Yes Steve, there isnt a decent emoticon for things posted intended to be tongue-in-cheek or sarcastic.

Occasionally I will use [sarcasm] [/sarcasm] which would have neatly fitted round the phrase in question :-D

[sarcasm]which does I have to concede run on 2 sources of power....Petrol and Gasoline to be precise...[/sarcasm]

I had another look for sarcastic fonts but none clearly imply sarcasm.

Isn't the raised eyebrows icon near enough?

I think Toyota have it right though with the hybrid cars as a stepping stone to full electric until the full electric becomes a more acceptable option for the ordinary car buyer.

When the range goes up and the price comes down they'll take off like the petrol diesel stuff did in the early days.

Toyota have always remained tight-lipped on the electric range of their hybrids, as well they might with their tiny battery packs. They've also remained silent about on-road usage - i.e. what proportion of journeys are achieved without tailpipe emissions - particularly in urban areas.

We know that the notion of the "self-charging hybrid" is a deceit, as it completely excludes any possibility of low-carbon and clean electric energy. Doesn't stop their marketing onslaught, though.

I had a Toyota Prius T Spirit from new in 2007 for 2.5 years (I had to lock it up for the last 6 months of my contract hire due to excess mileage) and I averaged 48mpg over 38000 miles - hardly spectacular - it was comfortable and quiet and novel but did not give me the super cheap motoring I had been led to believe. On electric only it would do around 8 miles! :roll:
I could not say that anything about it was particularly special except perhaps the self parking feature which was pretty cool in those days (even though I always ended up parking it myself!) I took it on one long trip to the Belgian GP in 2008 and it performed faultlessly and did cause some laughs parking itself outside the F1 paddock. However I did not have another one as I found my Shogun, which I converted to veggie oil as a trial for my Delica and hence I have not been back down the electric route since. Both Shogun and Delica returned equivalent mpg of 55-65, had I been buying diesel, in great comfort and carrying ability. :)

So hands up if you know who owns Jaguar Land Rover without looking it up.

Edit:Corrected but not quick enough!

There was some 1st April 2019 speculation about VW acquiring JLR from TATA
..and if you look at the numberplate VW financial services are plastered over it.
But as Far as I know TATA still own JLR.

TOH Tata?

Nope, I then looked at the spoiler. The VW group is getting a bit large, isn't it? I hope they have learned from Dieselgate (in that they should not try and play hard and fast by the rules, rather then learning they should not get caught!).

Apologies too Mick....see below

OOPS thanks for the quick replies Chaps but I think I put 2 and 2 together and made 5.

I have just seen that the original article and there is only one or two references on the net to it, was dated 1st April 2019and headed VW to buy JLR for £30 bn which is likely to have been a spoof

The VW Finance number plate on the brand new Jaguar E-Pace had me predisposed to thinking that VW must have taken them over, but no further evidence of that on the net so I think James is still right and its TATA but if anyone can find evidence to the contrary please do.

If Wikipedia is correct (and up to date) Tata Motors still own JLR;

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaguar_Land_Rover

While JLRs' website shows their parent company is Tata Motors;

https://www.jaguarlandrover.com/2020/overview

JUst for the avoidance of doubt that is the current ownership position of JLR, and has been corrected in my previous posts.
