Affected VINS were From 9L518753 to 9L541864

Yours is 9L553718
Thanks for that ! Its what I expected.
Time to get on with it then, see if it can be resurrected. Interesting, there are very few used LH wiper motors on ebay, several RH though....

Thanks again,
Byron.

Yes, I think I mentioned previously in other threads on this, be very careful as the LHD and RHD drive vehicles have different wiper motors and are not interchangeable. So if you see a vehicle on ebay, make sure it is from a RHD car.

I shall ring the supplier of a wheel for me last December. He has nearly a complete car (minus a wheel)

Hello,

I’ve had a read through this thread, and was wondering if I could get peoples opinions.

I have a C5, and the wipers have just packed up.

Drivers side moves up a few inches then goes back down, passengers doesn’t move at all.

I’ve had it diagnosed as the passenger motor, but I’m skeptical of the quality of the diagnosis; surely with the driver’s side being the master and only moving up a few inches, it’s the one at fault? Its magnet has slipped, and as a result it’s only getting a few inches of travel, and it’s not even sending a signal to the passenger side to move? (Because driver’s moves first a fair few inches before signal is sent to passenger if I’m correct)

Opinions welcome.

Given the dificulty and expense of obtaining replacement motors it has to be worth removing them, opening them up, checking the magnets and general condition.

Certainly your driver's side motor needs attention as described, from a practical point of view if you can get that working then wet weather visibility will be very good and the passenger side may spring into action.
As a test if you have checked inside the motors just plug them in before bolting them into the location or putting the wiper arms on and then run them to see how much movement you have.

Hope that helps.

Good shout Andy, and thanks for the tip regarding checking its operation before reinstalling.

This same “specialist” who told me it was my NS wiper also said I had to get a motor coded in after installing? I assume that’s not wholly accurate?

There are those on here more qualified than me but no one has commented about coding Mk1, 2 or X7 C5 wiper motors, so I think that your 'specialist' is mistaken.

Opening and investigating the wiper mechanism for moisture, oxidation or rust build up, lubrication drying out or magnet out of position is well documented on the forum, you have nothing to lose.

It is worth clearing debris from the location of the wiper arm spindle which can hold moisture.

I wonder if the master motor sends the slave motor the 'start' command, starts moving its' wiper, and then cancels that when it detects the slave motor has not responded?

Yes the relationship is master and slave and if any of the 2 are playing up it will cause them to play up - which is why the diagnostic needs to be done to determine which ECU has the issue, as it cannot be determined from the wiper arm behaviour or positioning.

Definitely doesn't need to be coded. I would have a look and see if you can get the driver side moving properly. The driver side will work without the slave so chances are you need the mechanics of the drivers motor cleaned and greased and the magnet realigned.I have experimented with this a good bit. I have a spare set in case they go. It sounds like the diagnosis is correct on the nearside motor.

Incorrect I assume you meant to say; yeah when this weather clears up I’ll take the drivers out first and get cracking.

The magnet business; I assume it’ll be obvious when it comes apart, the pictures on here aren’t brilliant.

It was my driver’s side.

Sure enough the magnet was loose, glued it back on shaft, bit of silicone to seal the unit back up, works perfectly. Really easy job all round, plenty of access, no drama.

This is what car forums are all about, brilliant stuff.
