Citroen C4 Timing Belt Wearing

Post by floggmolly »

Hi, I bought a 2005 Citroen C4 1.4 16v Petrol about a year ago with the timing belt broke, I got the valves replaced and the head skimmed, put all back together and I noticed that the belt works its way out to the edge of the pulley, The edge of the belt got frayed so I got another new belt on it, it seemed to be ok then, so I put all the covers on but yesturday I noticed noice like then fan belt rubbing off something when I was ticking over at traffic lights, I pulled in and took off the timing cover to find that the belt was back out over the two camshaft pulleys, What would be doing this? Thanks in advance.

Sounds like one of the pulleys is on the tilt under load, not sure of the arrangement on that model, did you fit a cambelt kit with new pulleys ? is there a rubber damper in the crank pulley ?

What do you mean 'On the tilt under load' , Yes I put a full Timing belt kit and pump on it! No it's a solid crank pulley

What Mr Oily means is that with everything tensioned up, something is not running true. Therefore you should be looking at the pulleys, tensioner etc to see if there's a worn bearing, as something is throwing the belt off line.

Okay thank you, is that the camshaft pulleys or the plastic rollers that come with the kit?

Put it on straight and the watch when you start it up and see which pully its running off first.

Every wheel the belt goes around, watched like Peter said.

In this situation for all it costs, I would just pick up a decent quality full belt and pulley kit.

Something is running out of true, most likely one of the tensioner pulleys or idlers (if applicable). If the water pump is cam belt driven it's worth looking at too, and it too should be changed.

If you fit a new set by the book it should be fine, as the odds of the crankshaft or camshaft pulleys moving are pretty slim!

...but check the bolts anyway to make sure they're tight! ...I have had a crankshaft pulley (that I had never touched) part company with the engine before without warning!
