That is at the top of Honister Pass between Borrowdale and Buttermere. Its part of the Slate Mine/Quarry may well have been a bridge of some sort or a base for overhead ropeways as part of the quarrying operations. It may feature in this little film from 1939 :-D

Here is an absolute gem of a film, you would never find it randomly searching for it, but I did at some point in time. Obviously lavishing languishing unwatched in the FCF archives. It is a charming film from 1939, with a little what they describe as an "Austin 8" being put through its paces on a tour round the Lake District and all its testing passes some of which were unsurfaced rough tracks. It wouldn't be too much of a spoiler to say that it was a resounding success and the little Austin 8 took it in its stride.

Should be compulsory viewing, but as ever the choice is with the viewer/reader. Tremendous "clipped English" commentary even if the scenery, the techincolor presentation, the jolly music and the remarkable journey of the car aren't quite enough entertainment :-D

Real 2024 problem though, It's 15 minutes long.

I remember watching that film before Neil, possibly from a previous post on here or maybe at one of my old Rally Club meets where we had a film night now and then!! :-D
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!

I have posted it up twice once well and truly lost in my "Glow Plugs Annihilate 2.0 HDi Xsara Picasso" thread in 2016 and once in "Mick's Motoring March Meander" in 2020. The film is just too much of a gem for the FCF Audience of 2024 not to have an opportunity to see it :-D.

The BB Micra did do some of that route on our recent tour, Kirkstone/"The Struggle"/Honister/Newlands passes with flying colours on the tarmac of 2024. It would have been in a sorry state had the roads/ mountain tracks been as they were in 1939.

Interesting Lakeland Crash Barriers on Kirkstone in 2024.

Then the March Meander thread it would have been. Sadly our September Shuffle plans won't allow us to get that far west as the time on the travel days is pretty well accounted for already. I feel a more NW England trip needs to go in the pipeline at some point!! :-D

Wow! That's a great video 😀 Plucky little car!

You went along some places very popular with cyclists Neil. Did you see many?

Yes saw plenty including a couple going up Honister and quite a few speeders on bikes down the other side to Buttermere. On the Newlands valley road after the initial climb out of Buttermere, the pretty narrow single track road is downhill all the way to virtually Keswick. At times I was holding up a Cyclist behind the Micra as I took every turn at a speed where I could stop if I met a car/tractor/camper van etc coming the other way. He never overtook but could have had the speed to do so in certain sections.

I have done the Keswick-Borrowdale-Honister Pass-Buttermere-Crummock Water-Whinlatter Pass-back to Keswick on my Raleigh Super Nova! some years ago now. Fell off within 200 yards of setting off by putting a wheel in a rut at the side of the road and over correcting and fairly knocking the wind out as I crashed chest first to the tarmac. Carried on and did the whole lot most likely with cracked ribs, and the next few nights on getting home I had never known such agony in trying to get comfortable to sleep!

Enjoyed every minute though!

Plenty of Wind at Beadnell today, but not the crashing waves of a previous visit. Couple of Windsurfer's had those Boards like at the Olympics, with the "Hydrofoil" underneath which raises the board out of the water giving a faster ride.

Last night we decided to find a pub which wasn't a part of a chain. I remembered one I used to patronise 50 years ago and we went for it! What a good decision that turned out to be :-D
MTMO

A sense of humour pervades the atmosphere:

and the food was fantastic, this bread and butter pudding was preceded by a superb Steak and Guiness pie with delicious minted mushy peas!!

And a little bonus we weren't expecting you can share here.

Yes we will be going back!!
