Had an oil leak...

Unread post by XantiaMan »

And still do, but closer to sorting it now!

A while back, i slightly overfilled my sump, easy to do if the dipstick is shot! The rubber section had hardened and bits fallen off, so i could only get an approxmate level when i topped up. As it happens it was only slightly over when the dipstick was replaced, had to order one from Citroen.

Also a while back, i gave it some stick on a dual carriageway up to the legal limit, but because the dipstick was no longer sealing and the level was a bit high, it blew some oil out, this ended up travelling along the underbonnet felt and dripped onto the pipes at the back, and onto the turbo, so i thought...

It was cleaned up and checked visually for leaks. Weeks have passed and its all been ok but a few days back i smelt the unmistakable smell of oil burning.

I looked again and saw this -

Oil 'apparantly' leaking from the oil feed pipe. I tried to nip it up with a 17mm but it was already very tight. Cleaned again with degreaser but yet again when i put my foot down it was leaking oil from somewhere.

I couldnt drive it any longer in case there was an issue, a shame as it looks great at the minute after a good clean yesterday, always happens!

This morning i got my spanners out, cut my arms up a bit but managed to get some boost pipes out the way, and luck seems to be on my side as i found the problem.

This is the connector piece between the turbo and alloy boost pipe that goes to the intercooler and then after that, to the throttle body. It has a metal insert in the centre to reinforce it.

It has seen better days -

Completely split at the bottom, so under high load and boost, was blowing out a little bit of oil onto the exhaust manifold and directly inline with the oil feed!

Heat and age must have got to it. It will have also been losing a little bit of boost, so its a shock to me considering how well it goes, been like it for a while.

Off to Citroen then, to order the bit. Hopefully its not NLA but i could replace it with some universal pipe if needed.

I was going to remove the turbo if the cause couldnt be found, and get it uprated. This will wait for now, a job for the winter.

The oil is just residual sitting in the pipes and it only takes a tiny amount to create a lot of mess and smoke! Oil feed moves slightly if you wiggle it but almost certain its not leaking, its rare for it to do so.[/url]

Well done Gareth :D Good diagnosis!

I would almost hazard a guess the similar item on the TD is very similar, if not interchangable...

Very good work there indeed fella :)

If it were me i would see about some kind of silicone section instead as the metal inside will just mean it cant flex as much as is needed and decent silicone wont need the metal support to stop it ballooning under heavey boost. I bet while it was fitted it was near enough sealed other than when the boost really kicked in...

The oil feed pipes on most cars seem to be a right PITA.

If you do replace your turbo i would advise to take the oil feed pipe to Pirtek or such like and see if they can make up a flexible job that would replace it and then get some new seals for it as well, i did a few GT28r/rs turbos a while back and always found heating up the cooper washer and then fitting it while hot and then tightening up when it cooled a bit seemed to offer the best seal :)

Part on order, should be here on Tuesday.... Cost £16.

I have some flexy silicone joiners on the Maestro, they work a treat.

With the metal section and the joiner fitted correctly there should be virtually no movement on the fitting which i think was the intention.

I think your right that it was only under lots of stick that the joint would leak, but its nice to know in a way that it was leaking!

Braided hose would be my choice when the turbo is uprated...

Good news, the hose arrived a day early, cannot recommend Duff Morgan in Norwich more highly, very swift and professional.

I will be fitting the pipe and cutting my arms and hands up a bit more in the morning. Its been a bugger seeing it sit there since i valeted it, with the weather so nice i just wanted to drive it!

All sorted, went back together a treat, even getting the feed back into the clamps on the inlet pipe was easy, i actually enjoyed it!
