Worse case perhaps but only after the rubber was peeled away.
Just found a pair I removed off a car I broke a while back
- agreed they've got a tad worse since perhaps but they show
just how bad they can get and where they rot out:

It was shocking just how out of true the alignment on the head of one of these
two strut tops is and the bukling of the remaining metal on the mounting plate.

You don't have to wait any more for disaster when your strut mount will eventually fail!

Our company renovates Citroen XM strut mounts with polyurethane. Original shape, geometry and hardness retained. Improved inside construction now preventing from splitting strut mount into two parts in case of elastomer failure (though its very unlikely with our polyurethane material). Corrosion resistant coating applied. We can renew strut mounts even with corrosion hardly damaged lower plate and also remake drivers side to passengers side and vice versa. Two years warranty is applicable for our renewed strut mount!

We are constantly enhancing quality of our products. In the attached photos strut mounts with metal shields and natural black color.

As metal cone plates deteriorate unequally so we have to repair them by welding also individually. We will add welding or additional metal where needed. Besides no rust problem will arise any more after our special, durable multilayer anticorrosive coating.

yes they have, that is the exact same damage i had on my Activa only slightly less messy which is why i changed the bonnet, those struts are a crap idea, My Honda Del Sol had exactly the same side mounted strut and the bonnet would twist under its own weight, changing the Activa one to a front mounted type.

I have just spent the last 2 hours reading this sticky,... it is all news to me ! & very depressing, I am about to run straight out & check both my Xantia...

so , had a long look, they look new on top....! see pics... but the OS gatter is hanging down & althought the metal on top looks ok, inside looks odd, see photo.... what is that orange stuff ?? felt seal ??

I can not believe Citroen has not done something about this ! If Toyota can get into trouble for a floor mat getting stuck under an accelerator pedal what the hell is going on here! Obviously there are very few Citroens in the United States of Litigation.

Just a thought, if like me, one wanted to get a precis of this epic, is there a way of attaching or directing to a summary? I have made up a bit of one in pdf form.

Yes, you're right this has become a bit unwieldy and actually there's a
disincentive to plough through every page. I would've said adding a
summary in a post won't work as itd get lost in the thread when new
postings are subsequently made so a separate word/PDF file makes
sense.

I have all the pictures and illustrations so will pop something together;
after all, that's what I do in my day job as a graphic designer. I'll try
and sort something asap and maybe a new sticky entry will keep it
less cumbersome.

Certainly along with the removal and refitting step by step there really
ought to be a what to check series of pictures etc and what are the
failure warning signs. A droopy gaitor suggests the round symmetry
of the top collar has now distorted/stressed out of true with a now
compromised structural integrity.

As it happens, though probably mentioned in the earlier threads, in Oz or
NZ the vehicle inspectorate was aware of the rubber failure and has issued
a document highlighting this issue which has been circulated to test stations.
In the UK, VOSA apparently has made a similar warning.

As far as I am aware, to date nobody has yet been injured with a failure but
I can't help feeling it must just be a matter of time before there is due to
circumstances where vehicle speed/cornering forces combine with ever
deteriorating UK roads and there'll be an 'off'

Andrew, may be best to draft up a nice piece and have it mad a sticky and locked, that way it can be easily read and not added to and become bloated.

Another interesting/depressing find i made a couple of days ago is rubber condition, anyone who has seen my XM strut tops will know they look very good indeed, with the car being 19years old they look like new but after taking one off as part of a Non hydractive strut top experiment i notied the rubber is cracking rather badly, age is really getting to it and although theis no rust at all this rubber degridation could lead to a similar sudden failure and as these cars get older it is something that needs checking a lot more carefully than you would when looking for rust.
I will admit however Xantia tops seem more rust prone, probably due to the rubber coating they have.

Might be worth creating a read only library instead of super stickies, i know its a chunk of work but super stickies attract posters and soon become bloated.
Mainly by talk of honda bonnet stays, kitchens etc etc
