Here's a clock for you Jim. One of Hexham's quirky little shops up an alleyway.

What caught my eye was the names on the dial, in particular Irehopeburn (should be Ireshopeburn) . Odd sort of name but well-known enough to me, it's a small village at the top end of Weardale, very isolated and hardly I would have thought been a centre of clockmaking

I'm guessing it must be related to the person who the clock was made for.

Often, clocks like this were made by local carpenter/joiners as a sideline when work was short. They used a standard ready-made movement with custom-made faces...

A bit like these days where all clocks have the same little square black Chinese made quartz movement powered by an AA battery. Only the cosmetics differ...

Speaking of clocks, one of mine suddenly stopped the other day. It seems OK now but I fear it's in need of a full overhaul. Bar replacing the weight suspension cords in 2005 it's not been overhauled since 1998 so it's due for a bit of attention...

I need to replace the cords with proper catgut. Currently it's strung with strimmer line...

Happily, not to their guts James Actually, it contains no cat... Traditionally, it's made from sheep's intestines... I'm OK with sheep and actively use lanolin for skincare and wear bits of their fleeces

Today I've been busy preparing Bluebell for the Redbourne Classic Car show tomorrow and in doing so she got a chance to meet Polly and get to know her

Pix is looking on...

It's been ages since I've been out for a decent drive in Bluebell. She needed fuel so that was a perfect opportunity to go for a joyride and that's just what it was

I wanted to give her a good shake-down as tomorrow she has to make a fairy quick run down the M1 to the show. Happily. she seems fine.

Earlier, I spent some time renewing my breakdown insurance. Until now I'd been on a basic policy with Green Flag as it was all I really needed when I first resumed driving but changing times and driving means I now need something better. I binned Green Flag as all attempts to call them - can't do much with them online - advised in excess of a 30 minute wait. Sod that...

So I did a bit of research and went with LV Britannia Rescue. They offer a reasonably competitive personal policy that covers me for any car, driver or passenger, with recovery to where I want to be recovered to and not where they want to recover me to. I found many only offer recovery to a 'Place of Safety' and don't want to know of cars in excess of 16 or 20 years old. Everything with LV can be done online - another bonus!

I found it was very necessary to read the small print...
