As long as you never show them in public and never speak that you have, his books are a fairly good and interesting read. You can often find them in charity shops. His name is never mentioned in polite cycling company.

Assuming you rode up to Sharpenhoe Clappers from the Barton road did you then ride along Sharpenhoe Road to Streatley village?CitroJim wrote: 29 Jul 2023, 05:47
After yesterday's fast and furious 50 mile club ride, taking in some big hills down around Dunstable - Sundon Hill and the interestingly named Sharpenhoe Clappers, I proved to myself beyond all doubt that I'm not yet in need of an e-bikeA long way off in fact!
If so you may remember passing this sign:
which marks the house shown here:
which is the house that my mate Ken sold to his sister before going to live in Mallorca. She is still living there and I do drop in if I find myself passing by!! I spent many a long Friday night there playing backgammon and crib in the dim and distant.....
Small world!!
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!
I used to ride on two wheels, but now I need all four!

One great snippet of an interview from possibly 80 or so years ago between a reporter and a well-known Tour de France rider :
'Do you dope?'
'Yes, when I feel the need to..'
'And how often is that?'
'Almost always...'
I know that house very well Mick and it's a bit of a landmark for us as we know our pain and suffering is now over and it's not far to Harlington and the Hub and Spoke cafe with a nice fast downhill to get theremickthemaverick wrote: 29 Jul 2023, 09:51Assuming you rode up to Sharpenhoe Clappers from the Barton road did you then ride along Sharpenhoe Road to Streatley village?CitroJim wrote: 29 Jul 2023, 05:47

We, as a club, visit the Clappers quite often as we do enjoy a bit of the hilly stuff, something we lack in Milton Keynes...

Never. One's choice of running shoes is a very personal thing and only your own experience can determine the most suitable. I can offer advice based on my long experience but would never tell. Likewise, everybody runs their own run in their own way. Advice may be given based on experience but again, never in a dictatorial way.Rp0thejester wrote: 29 Jul 2023, 17:35 Jim, please tell me your not the old fella who tells people what running shoes they should be wearing and where they went wrong in their run....

Re: Citrojim's AX, Saxo, Pixo, Running and Cycling Tales
I now have a lovely new heating system installed in my house and it seems to perform rather well. The installer did a great job
First of many aspects of my major house renovation works are now complete. Windows, doors and fascias/gutters next followed quickly by the kitchen, loads of loft insulation and the decorating, new floor coverings and new furniture throughout...
Now concentrating on getting rid of all the tat I've accumulated over the years, thinking it might come in useful one day. It hadn't and is now just a menace. Skip on order... It'll soon be full. I expect I'll need two. Nothing is likely to be spared or given a reprieve. I may regret it but I doubt it.
Hoping to see all the Xantia stuff gone this week. If not, in the skip it goes. Space is needed in the garage attic to rehome some stuff in the house attic I do want to keep.

Good to hear that your renovations are going smoothly. Ours have been very slow to get started.

Re: Citrojim's AX, Saxo, Pixo, Running and Cycling Tales
An interesting day yesterday having an EICR (Electrical Condition Inspection Report) conducted on my house...
Needless to say, given it's mostly well over 45 years old and has been 'tweaked' a little over the years, it was no surprise it was unsatisfactory in many areas....
Some real horrors were found in the kitchen - such as a cooker point that wasn't and spurs all over the place... The average cowboy would have been proud!
All will be rectified in due course... My old consumer unit is going to Beamish as a museum is where it properly belongs!
Meanwhile, the route for my Willen Hospice 100 mile charity bike ride has been released. It's a good one and just over 4000 feet of climbing

Looking forward to it

Re: Citrojim's AX, Saxo, Pixo, Running and Cycling Tales
You will like this then.
Youngest daughter had similar problems. House built in the fifties, has had some upgrades and didn't need rewiring but did need a new consumer unit, a mix of wired and cartridge fuses and MCBs, plus, in a different location, much more recent MCB/RCD units for the shower, stairlift and electric front door.
She wanted me to fit stainless steel sockets and switches in her newly installed kitchen. The back boxes are all too shallow for them and the space in the partition walls too shallow to fit a standard back box.
Had to fit them in my house instead.

That must be some very thin walls Steve :surprised:
I'm still on 100% rewireable Wylex fuses in the house although I do have breakers in the garage. Nothing is compliant in my house or garage but luckily, the majority of the wiring is good to be used again... The metal-clad sockets in my garage are good for reuse but I've elected to have all new switches and sockets in the house. And having a lot more of them to obviate the need for four-way extension all over the place.
