Piece of door handle rod does the job well too :-D
Now there's a good tip! I made one years ago by grinding down a spare short 3/8" socket set extension bar and grinding flats on the other end to allow a tight-fitting spanner to be applied to rotate it...
Can't help but wonder if you retained the sprung ball of the extension and had a tensioner tool that clicked positively into place!

My "go to" material for making stuff is now the rod of (failed) anti roll bar drop links :-D

No, it was lost in the grinding necessary to make it a nice fit... Shame as it would be an excellent finishing touch...

I like that! Proper recycling :D

CitroJim,
just to confirm I only have one locking point on the pump..
Thanks for the info though very grateful.👍🏻
Matt,
Just so happens I’ve got to do the drop links on my BMW next weekend so I will keep them back for next time.. top tip!👍🏻
Thanks all..

Haha, good to hear my recycling tendancies are spreading! I have a "scrap bin" (actually bottom half of a dead wet and dry vacuum) that gets all the failed parts chucked in (and eventually weighed in for a pittance, but makes me happier it's going off to do something else) - but things keep being fished back out said "bin" and made into something else!

Favourite was Audi 1.9 TDI timing belt tensioner, reborn as a DV6 auxiliary belt tensioner (on a C4 with a stupid stretch belt system and no means of adjustment of tension) again out the scrap. Stuff with bearings escapes the bin unless bearing are clearly well past it, so that was from the "bolts and bearings bucket"

Yes I have very slight hoarding tendancies...

Don't do these 3 bolts up too tight. I found out the hard way (and also found out my torque wrench seriously under-reads at very low values!) That it's possible for these upstands to shear clean off (of the camshaft bearing cap) if overtightened.....

Yes runs on tickover fine and up to about two thousand rpm above that it gets rough white smoke and won’t go past 2750rpm advance solenoid makes no difference connected or not wonder if a diesel timing light would throw any light on it never knew there was one till today

Run her up on tick over doggone1 if you get time till she’s nice and hot..
Switch off for 5 mins then restart and see how she is..
I’m having to drive mine as I still use it for work..
That’s all I seem to do and it works somehow!! 🤞🏻

Doggone1, Sorry just re read your post.. a diesel timing light you say??
Let me know how that goes.. 🤔

Matt,
All done up very gingerly at first till gasket paste started to set then nipped up..
So far so good no oil loss.. 🤞🏻
Does anybody have access to vacuum pipe layout on a DW8B??? Or where to find it.. ???

doggone sorry I didn't get back to you sooner this thread is a bit hard to follow. I think you are getting air into the pump somehow that squeeze primer pump thing replace it, or fit an electric tick tick pump and wire it to the glow plugs. Some injector pumps have a filter on the inlet fuel line. remove the banjo fitting and remove it with a small pick. they are very hard to see. I know you said you had the pump rebuilt, some of those guys don't do a very good job. They can also let air in the front seal behind the pulley, you should be able to see if the seal has been replaced. Put some clear fuel line on the return line on the pump, and rev the engine Look for bubbles or milkshake. The other problem could be low internal pump pressure, there is a lift pump inside the injector pump which can cause issues if the vanes get sticky, or if the pressure regulator has an issue.

White smoke suggests very poor combustion, the 'smoke' being mainly unburned fuel... Normal cause is poor compression but the fact the engine starts and runs fine at tick-over and up to 2000 rpm would tend to rule this out...

Low compression usually manifests itself as starting issues with copious amounts of white smoke.

The timing being wildly off at higher engine speeds could also very much cause it and this may now, with most everything else being comprehensively ruled out would suggest an ECU or pump problem - more likely the latter...

Diesel timing lights do exist and work by detecting the fuel pressure pulses in one injector pipe to determining the ignition point... They are very scarce and specialised...

An easier and better way is to have the engine on diagnostics... That'll check timing and also may give more clues...

Yes, absolutely it can as the pressurised fuel is used as a hydraulic fluid to set and control timing... Also could be caused by fuel starvation and/or copious amounts of air in the fuel supply to the pump...

A good way to check flow and for air bubbles is to temporarily substitute a length of clear hose between the end of the fuel filter and the pump...

A plugged fuel filter and/or a partially blocked tank strainer can cause fuel starvation... I take it the fuel filter has been replaced? If so then a check of the tank strainer would not be a bad idea - algae can grow on it and if sufficient grows it can significantly reduce flow...

Picture in my post of the offending bacteria "diesel bug"

viewtopic.php?t=71261&start=15

(Page 2 if the link takes you back to the beginning or end)

Having had fuel delivery issues on a XUD - in my case clogged fuel filter caused by biodiesel (neat) gelling at low temperature - caught out by cold snap!

In that instance was an engine that made no power - hit a brick wall when the power just vanished - initially about 2500rpm, then 2000, 1500 as the filter clogged more and more (whilst I attempted to limp it home, about 3 miles!)

Would expect clogged tank strainer to give similar results for you.
