Ok, that clears it up. You may still have a claim against your credit card company for a refund - so worth checking with them.
Using PayPal for the likes of eBaying does provide another layer of security - because it separates your credit / debit card from the seller - they do not see any of those details, only PayPal who handle the credit and debits for you.

You can pay a lot of other firms with Paypal too, in fact most of my payments go that way.

Re: Replacement bulbs
I'm sure I read that you can only claim against a credit card company (or,at least mine) for purchases over £100 BUT, providing PayPal are as good as their word there won't be any need.
I understand the security angle now (it's been explained -for the 1st time!) but convenience trumps security every time as far as I'm concerned & I can't imagine anything worse than a credit card statement comprising only unidentifiable, barely comprehensible, entries. Anyway I'm not going to reactivate my PayPal a/c but I am glad I now know rather more about it & its purpose - &, indeed, eBay's peculiar "resolution centre" (which I'm about to put to the test again - just for fun really, as I'm not that fussed about the outcome).
