And why not ?I did and I don't regret it for one minute. You won't get 80mpg on a mk2 Prius but you can pretty well guarantee 50 however and wherever you drive it in the winter and nearer 54 in the summer and 10 quid road tax.
The mk3 which I would buy tomorrow if I could afford it will likely give you about 70 and 0 tax. Batteries I hear somebody cry will cost an arm and a leg when if they go wrong well Toyota guarantee them for 100K and in the MK2 you wouldn't replace the whole battery anyway you can replace them cell by cell and a single cell is about £28.00. Not so sure on this issue as regards a Mk3 as they use a different technology.
I could (and if you want will go on) but suffice it to say I went through the exercise you are now going through a year or so back did a lot of research into DIY maintenance and came to the conclusion that it was far from the no-brainer that many would have you believe.
I still have the C5 it still gets driven very occasionally but it has probably not done more that 2K in the last 12 Months and then only when the capacity of the estate is needed, the Prius on the other hand has done over 10K IMHO it's a nice drive and I like it, if you like auto's and want economy I defy anyone to drive one and NOT like it.
