Re: Injectors misbehaving but trying to understand the numbers
I left the engine in place, just removed gearbox. With that aluminium bit out the way I don't think it was too bad to get just box off (and in again!)

I'm going to try it to see if I can do it incase I ever need to do a clutch on it. it's more so curiosity. The forecast is good after tomorrow for the foreseeable future.so should be fine.
Looking forward to the car show I'll try and take pictures and post up.

Re: Injectors misbehaving but trying to understand the numbers
I've seen the same in the past Darren and always assumed water had got in via an open breather over a long period of time. On stripping those boxes, rust has been apparent. This has been on rescued 'boxes from scrappers. ''Boxes can suffer condensation over time and during disuse.darbuck wrote: 23 Apr 2025, 20:51 Well I just drained the gearbox and the oil is like mayonnaise/milk.
How your oil has become so contaminated in such a short time is a bit of a puzzler. Oil floats on water so when you last drained it any water would have drained out first...
As you say, there's no connection to the cooling system. Was it raining when you last filled it? Could have new oil have been contaminated in some way?
One lateral thought... Knowing gearbox oil has lots of sulphur in it I wonder if whatever has failed in the 'box has caused the sulphur to be somehow centrifuged and separated out of the oil base?
I'm likely talking rubbish there. Just pondering. A post-mortem on the duff 'box may reveal what's caused this...

Re: Injectors misbehaving but trying to understand the numbers
More thoughts. Knowing it's impossible to fully drain any gearbox, maybe there's a crevice where a substantial amount of water could have collected and not able to escape when the drain plug was opened?
Again, a gearbox PM may shed light...

Hmm interesting train of thought. It was damp after substantial rain fall so maybe just humidity or as say centrifugal force causing kind of frothing.

Re: Injectors misbehaving but trying to understand the numbers
I got the call to go pick up the gearbox so went and got it and a lh Drive shaft. It's a 2013 gearbox with 153000 km so happy days. Silky smooth as far as I can make out. I can't find anything obvious wrong with it so without stripping it I can't say it's bad which tells me it must be good? I'm not taking it apart to find out. I'm going to pull the engine and gearbox on Monday evening hopefully. I cleaned up the gearbox see pictures. It was filthy so I wasn't putting it in the car like that. I didn't take before pics just after. Still not perfect but a million times better than it was. My house is surrounded by big leylandiis which I hate with a passion which cause moss to grow all over my tarmac as you can see in the pictures. I got a quote to cut them down. €30000 I was quoted and that was them leaving the waste. Bain of my existence.

Your showing your age now Jim
with triffids. They were terrifying to me as a child. Hilarious when I look at them now.absoloutly despise leylandiis, they get out of control so fast. They still haven't banned planting them here, they grow from 14 to 30 feet in 5 or six years. I was sick for the best part of a decade so couldn't get to them.i'm all good now but half of them are out of control now. The gear box looks pretty good so I'll get to it this week, weather is supposed to be ok for the rest of the week. Couldn't work on it last night. SWMBO is after coming down with a dose so on dinner duty.

Darren,
Gearbox looks good and good luck. Leylandi are real pain remember cutting them down in an other property. What a difference with daylight in the house once done.
