There was a bit on the news the other night, they were speaking to someone in a terraced house who had a heat pump. The owner reckoned it was only 'cheaper' to run because they could store cheap rate electricity in their Tesla power wall thingy and use that to run the heat pump. Without the cheap rate electricity and battery storage, running the heat pump was marginal at best.

I saw this and might have misheard it. I thought they said with the battery storage it was marginal.

Some time back when I looked at heat pumps it appeared the pump uses about 1 kW every hour so around 8800 kW a year. With electric being so expensive they cost a lot more to run than gas heating. From our bills we use about 2000 kW of electric and about 11000 kW of gas. If the gas was replaced with electric then the 11000 kW of gas at about 6p giving £660 would be replaced with electric at about 24p giving £2110, an extra £1450 a year, doubling our total gas/elec bill inc standing charges. The only way to make heat pumps viable so people can afford them is to cut the electric cost and the installation cost.

mickthemaverick wrote: 28 Feb 2025, 14:13 That video suggests that you can use the system to store overnight cheap energy from the grid for use during the day, as well as storing solar since he says 'our nationwide network of installers can install and set up your system for you, and install solar panels if you want them' Thus could you have one just to keep your take from the grid to the cheap periods and just save money given that it would not affect your carbon footprint? :)
That's the way it works Mick, even without solar the battery can be used to store cheap night rate electric to use in the daytime and their Smartstore software does all sorts of magic.
I can set the car to charge and do the washing while I sleep, if the mains goes off the battery takes over, no need to set anything it just works, most of the daytime stuff comes off the battery except the high wattage full on electric cooker or shower.
Even on the darkest days the battery automatically gets topped up on the cheap night rate.

Given their supporting infrastructure, these must be some hefty chargers!

^^^^^ Not watching that, he disgusts me on top of talking American.

It is hoped the new gigafactory being built at the International Advanced Manufacturing Park (IAMP) in Washington, Sunderland will support 1,000 jobs and power 100,000 electric vehicles annually.

Plans for the plant were approved last year and it will be the second in Sunderland for AESC UK, which is Nissan's battery partner.

The money will go towards the remainder of its construction and subsequent operation.

The government said the gigafactory would power up 100,000 electric vehicles (EVs) each year and would see the UK become more globally competitive in that field and help it achieve its net zero target.

Because of its size and being partially located on green belt land, the building's planning application was referred to the Secretary of State for a final decision before finally being green-lit in September 2024.

I would guess that it's the image of Trump that heads up the video that's off-putting. Nearly everything he says is a lie and it would just be waste of time to listen to him.
