Thanks all.. Jim a star drive of course .. ! :)
Lexi so far I am about 10 hours in but going pretty slowly. I am enjoying it. The farm is quiet in the evenings .. radio is on, occasional 6x cans appear ;) it's just a hobby really. Fingers crossed this weekend is not to wet.. nothing yet.

More details later.. popped home 2 fields away to refill the tea mug.
New engine just arrived on a palate.. Dare not unwrap it in case it's a 2 stroke chainsaw engine or something
Oddest Christmas present I have brought myself !

I think it's a perfect Christmas present actually John ;)

I'd be happy wiith something like that. Just think of the X7 as a Christmas project. Sure beats being comatose in front of the telly stuffed with turkey and pudding...

not quite Steve .. :)- yesterdays pics are all in reverse time order, I forget to say ;)

long story short.. new engine turned up Saturday morning.. old engine was removed soon after.. new unit looks - and is - an exact copy of old.. I set about swapping some bits for the rest of weekend, and the rain held off.. Gearbox refit was tricky this afternoon.. lining up Torque Converter openings with lugs on the input shaft plus all the splines while grabbing 80 KG of box was harder then I remember, even with the crane I still managed at least an hour for this bit.. tipex was useful in showing locations after the engine and box were closing in.

So, a week after buying the car with a hopeful oil pump fail, I have brought another engine, and during evenings after work and 1 weekend I am nearly ready to drop the new unit in.. but it feels a rollercoaster somehow.. I think a lot of us know how to do a 'Haynes job' on every aspect of this refit (and I would love to).. but I have other pressures against me..

So, I neglected to buy and change the rear crank seal.. no obvious signs of leakage and I wanted the box on today...
I haven't changed the cambelt (donor car was 60K allegedly)
I have checked the turbo has no movement..
I have changed the oil filter

but I now have a bit of time.. a small bit.. with the engine still out I can do things to help it, if it starts and runs ok..

Today I detected the turbo on the old engine had gone.. and that engine had excess oil in the pipework..
this donor engine has some oil presence in the pipes, as does my everyday C5 110..
I don't really know if the original engine suffered turbo then oil pump or vice versa..
The turbo oil feed pipe has a long filter on, and I need to read up on the 1.6 engine and issues with that.. if the filter should be cleaned changed or removed I still have time before refit..

the oil in the bellhousing pic is dark, but red.. so I am sure its my tranny fluid and not engine oil...
I cant see the gearbox would come out with the engine in place, but I am not 100% on this
removing the turbo in situ would be painful.. but it always is with a rear mount turbo on an inclined motor.
may have more thoughts tomorrow..

Great progress by the sounds (pics aren't showing for me, for some reason?)

:-k I believe I have read on here about the importance of changing/removing the in-line filter in the turbo oil feed line on the 1.6hdi?

If the engine is out, I genuinely can't see a good reason not to change the cambelt. It will never be that easy (or cheap) to do, again!

can anyone see the pics in my post (3 posts before this I think)

not much news.. ordered a cambelt, the turbo pipe, seals, injector seals, Tie rod.. - several of these had to come from dealers.. I asked if the oil pump had been uprated and he said no.. a possible chain change only !..

I went at both crank pulleys tonight, wasn't easy getting them off on my own with no starter to help..
both had timing which was set the same and looked spot on..

the original engine has compression! lots.. don't understand.. garage said they had compression checked it and found none...

Pictures now visible :-)

Don't forget to have a damn good look at the steering rack pinion to see if it's in any way on the way out. A common failure :-(

thank Bobins.. :) pics are in the right order now

Pinion : I have looked once, I saw a brown rust coloured shaft and I turned away quickly.... no leak yet... may slightly undo and tighten any relevant bolts in that area to help in the future.. will try and take some close up pics of the rack at some point, as working on them is hell when you cant see and don't know what's what

that lower sphere on the right rear of the engine bay looks like a job to change on a normal day !
