There is actually no stipulation of distance at all within the law. You have to have a pre-booked appointment, and be going directly there. There was a court case about this some time ago. You could, for instance, have a maintenance contract with a particular garage and test centre - I'll find the case and link to it.

The caveat of course is that you can still be nicked for driving an unroadworthy vehicle, even if it is to an MOT station.

Guys sorry i guess i was looking for history to repeat itself and that was obviously too much to hope for.
When i gave my last one away through here i got a phone call telling me they'd take it and made arrangements on the spot
I got photos showing me it fixed up afterwards.

The car i'm letting go this time was in much better condition lots of new parts and a defined list of things to fix however i've received three texts one to break it up, one, later withdrawn, to fix it up and one asking for a failure sheet.

As I tried to explain at the beginning I'm in China I didnt want any hassle with it but it seems free wasn't quite the right price to get someone seriously interested in putting it back on the road, so it will be at my local scrapyard by the weekend. I obviously misjudged the amount of work involved so sorry for that, the dealer quote to do it all was £1069 so i thought anyone with the skills could do this.

As i said lots of new or very low mileage parts on it so well worth a call to the scrappies if there is anything you are interested in. I'll talk to my wife tonight and get her to make the arrangements tomorrow.

Good luck on this one. I hope that Plod is off elsewhere nice (or having a good day) so that you have an un-interrupted journey.

You have to be driving it *straight* to a pre-booked MOT test and not going to other destinations first. Are there many places doing MOTs in Warrington on Friday evenings?

If you get pulled, the WILL check.

ANPR aside, if driving illegally don't give it away by driving like a granny. Be almost cheeky; show confidence. Drive with your parkers on, do a light check before heading off, and make sure it's clean - especially the wheels. I can't overstress this bit.

One thing I find fascinating about the UK, or perhaps its just Scotland, is that there are hardly any police on the road...seriously!

In New Zealand I literally couldn't drive 10 minutes across town without passing at least one cop car, maybe two. It would be a rare journey indeed through town that I didn't pass at least one.

Here I can drive for days or even weeks at a time without seeing a single cop car on the road, whether in small towns, motorways or in the big city. Perhaps there are a lot more unmarked cars, if so I wouldn't know of course!

I also notice that the speed limits here are flaunted to a far greater degree than New Zealand - if you drive at the speed limit on the motorway here you really feel like a granny that's being overtaken by all and sundry and expect to be passed at any moment by someone using a walker! People are brazenly driving at 10, 20, occasionally even 30 mph over the speed limit on the motorway all the time, even in peak hours. You need to be doing 10-15mph over the speed limit just to keep up with the flow in the "slow" lane...

Perhaps its the fact that there seems to be a lot more police on the roads in NZ as well as a large number of hidden speed cameras. If you do 110-115Km on the motorway (100Km limit) in NZ you're almost guaranteed a speeding ticket from one of the numerous hidden cameras...
