the only thing i would be concerned about is damage to the nipple seat with the drill bit in the alloy caliper, because if you damage that you might have prob's sealing the replacement,

Do you or anybody else think by using one of the LHM seals cut down or 'O' ring seal may work.

No, it won't as O rings are not designed to seal like that.

It's these issues that have made me use nipple adaptors in the past Kenny...

Using one you can tap the caliper oversize and no worry about creating a sealing seat in the caliper itself. The set in the adaptor takes care of it...

You can try retapping and fitting an oversize nipple by all means and if it fails you can fall back to the adaptor. Nothing lost then...

thanks for your replies, I was think of using the 4.5mm union taken from the ABS block as an adaptor otherwise where could I find something suitable as I don't have access to a turning laithe

I would use araldite

That would be perfect Kenny. It's an odd thread though. An M9. Taps are readily available on the 'bay though...

Cut the tread tight, use a slightly smaller tapping drill than recommended...

i think it would be easier and quicker to just get a second hand caliper,
also are you both sure brake fluid does not eat araldite or thread lock/seal ??????

Probably right Malcolm.

I had a Renault 14 a few years back and not long after buying it discovered that there was no bleed nipple in the front offside caliper, just a bolt

I set to and tapped a new thread then buggered about for around a day getting the seal chamfer right.

Then wondered why I hadn't just stuck a new (second hand) caliper on

Yes, agreed and I did float the idea at the start of this thread but it's just possible trying to get the old calipers off may result in a whole world of entirely new pain and despair...

You know what a game those caliper bolts can be, especially those that have lived up in the top of this sceptred isle...

Sorting the extant calipers may be the lesser of the two evils...

Re con calipers are about £100 each.
I haven't checked for 2nd hand calipers yet but I could end up with the same problem of stuck bleed screws!
Hence my route down new or altered bleed screws a lot cheaper.

It may end up with that or Adams find, a bolt fitted instead, it would work also

Brakes done at last

O/R bleed screw came with no problem set of mulgrips and that was that.

N/R bleed screw a pain in the proverbial but done by drilling out gradually until thread was separated from nipple seat, extracted it out and replace with new.
Both sealed lovely.

Removed air from new pipes.
