13 October 1958: Paddington Bear arrives in Britain
The little bear from "darkest Peru" appeared for the first time when "A Bear Called Paddington" was published on this day in 1958. So tonight Jo Whiley (Radio 2) had her usual theme half-hour based on all connections loosely based on Paddington Bear.
Tracks played included Lady Marmalade, Brown-Eyed Girl (Brown Family), Bear Necessities, Lucy in the sky with diamonds (Aunt Lucy), and for Michael Bond...Carly Simon with the Classic Bond song "Nobody Does it Better"...
...and this old favourite, which hopefully will get the assembled throng at the Pickled Egg singing along. It's a nicely constructed song with nice instrumental parts, for all its familiar simplicity...Henry Hall Orchestra and Val Rosing from 1932 no less
Regards Neil

Re: Pickled Egg Jukebox-Your Selections
I remember waiting for that to be played on Saturday mornings on Children's Favourites on the radio. Although I loved the song, looking back I think this was my favourite bear song:
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!
I used to ride on two wheels, but now I need all four!

A couple more eclectics.
The B side of the single was simply the A side but reversed so it ran backwards!

Re: Pickled Egg Jukebox-Your Selections
I was listening to Classic Rock yesterday and the joss dickey mentioned a Facebook conversation about 20 best piano intros to a record. My first thought was this
although the track they played, which I'll put up in a moment if I can remember what it was(!), was also goodun.

Re: Pickled Egg Jukebox-Your Selections
Nope, can't remember. But after a Stones record you have to have a Beatles record surely?
Fun fact 1) John Lennon and Paul McCartney helped provide backing vocals for the Stones on We Love You. I think it might have been in "payment" for Jagger and Richards appearing in the One World live recording of All You Need is Love.
Fun Fact 2) John Lennon appears to be playing the piano in this video but, of course, it was Paul McCartney's song. The answer is that there was no film taken of the recording of Lady Madonna and what we can actually see is film taken during the recording of John's Hey Bulldog.

Re: Pickled Egg Jukebox-Your Selections
Whilst trying to find my favourite piano intro I came across this version of my favourite piano piece. I actually found the video quite mesmerising once I realised what the falling lights were all about!! Not seen it before but it hooked me to the end!

Yes, a visual representation of the notes played and their duration. You will have seen something similar as a piano roll in a pianola.

Re: Pickled Egg Jukebox-Your Selections
Not piano introductions exclusively but Rick Beato's take on the 20 best keyboard intro's. Not having watched it I reckon Bohemian Rhapsody will come up pretty high in his list.

That has to be either Son of my Father (synthesiser has a keyboard!) or Whiter Shade of Pale for me!!

Looking further through my piano memories I found this track which demonstrates how the piano can sew together an entire song:
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!
I used to ride on two wheels, but now I need all four!

Re: Pickled Egg Jukebox-Your Selections
Well I have come to the end of my piano intro search and I must have listened to scores of possibilities, but I don't think I came across anything to better this old classic:
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!
I used to ride on two wheels, but now I need all four!

Re: Pickled Egg Jukebox-Your Selections
I saw that Rick Beato's 20 best keyboard intros but deliberately haven't played it so as not to colour my own opinion.
This is surely a classic. It's an interesting variation which brings Paul Simon to the fore as a singer as well as the songwriter.
And a proper piano, not a synthesiser!
EDIT
Damn, beaten to it while I waited on the phone for Plusnet to answer! I'll leave it up as a different variant though.

Re: Pickled Egg Jukebox-Your Selections
Well I have to say Paul that while I agree about the classic status, as evidenced by my post above
, I wasn't overawed with that version. I prefer the original!!

And here is said song with its own piano intro. The comments have it nailed when posters say that for The Beatles this was considered a throwaway song!Paul-R wrote: 13 Oct 2022, 23:16Fun Fact 2) John Lennon appears to be playing the piano in this video but, of course, it was Paul McCartney's song.
